I just watched Bush's performance.
I recently saw the German film, "Downfall," about Hitler's final days in his Berlin bunker. In it, the dictator demonstrated his divorce from reality by moving nonexistent army divisions about on a map and ordering impossible counteroffensives.
I was struck by the similarity. Bush says success will allow some minor troop withdrawals in the coming months. But what success? General Petraeus' recent testimony seems to have been mostly blatant lies and clever distortions about the situation in Iraq.
The same class of make-believe strategy is now coming from Bush as from Hitler, as he promises to move troops about the map.
Not that Bush is Hitler, of course. Hitler probably believed in those nonexistent divisions. I see no reason to think Bush actually believes he's winning, or that victories will allow him to withdraw any troops.
Bush is lying to gain time. He seems to only want to make sure he hands over a full-scale disaster to his successor.

I think it's clear that Democrats and Republicans are not working for us at this point. They are not my representatives.
I had to laugh this morning as a newscaster said that in an upcoming newscast that they'd tell us about how members of Congress were working on "anti-war legislation."
Anti-war has come to mean a criminal attack and occupation according to how the Democrat side of the capitalist war party would conduct it. Bush isn't criminal, he's just made mistakes. They'll conduct it better.
Or does it mean that they really endorse what Bush did, but they know in order to continue it, they have to change the people involved, and change how it's talked about?

| The rat-bastards of both parties are not mine either, but I'm afraid we're stuck with them and must continue the fruitless search for the lesser evil(s) yet again this coming election spasm. Our current Congress is amazing; idiological scumbags on the one hand and snivling pussies on the other, and little hope in sight. We rejoiced when The Republicans lost the majority in both houses but for all the good it's done it might just as well not have happened. The Democrats are too cowardly to press that advantage. Someone might be, *gasp*, offended.
I'll hand Bush one thing: he's consistant. He never varies from his course even if it leads him (and us) over a cliff, and while he/we are falling toward the rocks below, he'll tell us how great it all is. Any reading of the mendacious fool's history shows that it's been a life-long trait; fuck up then brag about it. If there were any justice, Bush & cronies would be in a prisoner's dock answering for war crimes and watching a gallows being erected through a barred window.
Kick 'em all out, burn the buildings, and start over from scratch!

Bush is consistent.
But no, they're all the same. There is no lesser. They're not against Bush's murderous behavior, they just think they can do it better. Or, at least they make a lot of talk that they can do it better. |

Some thoughts from The Rude Pundit.
It is too true; the differece in the evils is one of type, but even that falls before the egos of the those who only see the advantages of their offices and not the responsibilities. We are well and truly fucked.
