At Penn State York, the science "gender gap" favors females York, Pennsylvania (CEN) -- In a remarkable gender role reversal at one college, female students across the board in the various engineering and sciences curricula have not only eliminated their gender's "traditional" lag versus their male counterparts, they've actually reversed the situation. Women students at Penn State York now far outscore male students in tests, and achieve higher grades in engineering and the sciences. (Globally, women already excel over men in all other academic subjects.)
Penn State York has become the focus of ten new studies aimed at finding the cause for the remarkable change. If discovered, the cause might be emulated by many other universities, which seek a greater inclusion of women in science and engineering.
One study's lead scientist thinks the key may be in the way female science students are organized at York. Most of them belong to the same locally-founded, all-female science and engineering student organization. Says the study's leader, James Roofsen, "These young women won't let our researchers into their meetings, but whatever it is they discuss in there, I think it's they key to their success."
Joan MacKallistre, science and engineering club leader at Penn State York. Joan MacKallistre, a graduate biology student and President of Collegiate Ladies for Educational Advance and Vaulting over Average Grades in Engineering and Science, won't say what the secret is. "Let me just say that since we implemented our new strategy, the boys don't mess with us anymore. They just stand around in a daze with their mouths hanging open. This lets us concentrate on learning, at last."
