You are driving a small car at a constant speed. To your immediate right is a sheer drop off. To your left is a fire engine traveling the same speed as you. In front of you is a galloping horse that you can't seem to overtake. Behind you is a helicopter flying almost at ground level and pacing you. What can you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation?

Get off the freaking merry-go-round you drunken fool!

Those who danced were thought quite insane by those who could not hear the music.

Actually, the fire engine would not be traveling the same speed, it would be going a bit slower.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I'm not convinced. How did you deduce that he was talking about linear speed? I always assume people mean "radians per second" when they say "speed"

John's just this guy, you know.

This is what I love about this site. Even the silliest joke can spark the most unexpected conversation.

It's also the creepiest, nerdiest thing about the site.

You SnotBrains will know
hell for ignoring Linear Speed.
I do not promote or suggest
anyone killing you, but you
are unfit to live on Earth.

Radial Speed is Bad Math
LINEAR SPEED SHOWN HERE IS
FAR SUPERIOR TO RADIAL SPEED. USE
IT TO SAVE HUMANITY.

Ignore Linear Speed at your
own peril, and of humanity.
You have a god like brain -
parallel opposite & analytical,
wasted if you believe in RADIAL SPEED.

It could also be travelling faster if the sheer drop was toward the center of the merry-go-round.
...
...
Why you would want to build it that way, I don't know...
...
...
It could also, for all intents and purposes, be travelling at the same speed if the diameter of the merry-go-round was really large.

Or if, per the premise of the joke, you're drunk.

I'm still not sure that de- and re-constructing humor is one of the things with which we skeptics should be involved.

Humor is perhaps a sense of intellectual perspective: an awareness that some things are really important, others not; and that the two kinds are most oddly jumbled in everyday affairs. ~Christopher Morley
