Buddhist Monks demolish junta's military base in devastating strike YANGON, Myanmar (BPA) -- After Myanmar police and military fired upon thousands of Buddhist monks and their supporters in a brutal attempt to stem a growing pro-democracy movement, the monks struck back.
The relative calm of a late afternoon in Yangon (Rangoon) was shattered by a roar from the direction of the famed Shwedagon Pagoda. Bright flames and smoke streaked upward into the sky from the gold-covered edifice. A few minutes later, word came from the city of Pathein that the military junta's army base just outside the city had been destroyed by a missile.
A powerful clandestine radio broadcast was transmitted nationwide from Shwedagon Pagoda.
"People of Myamar," intoned one senior monk, "the patience of Buddhist monks is legendary, but all things under heaven have limits. Today, the Shwedagon Pagoda has launched a missile attack upon the murderous military regime of our beloved land. We call for the surrender of all military personnel to the monks and people of Myanmar. Those that do not surrender will be struck down from the heavens, as happened today at the Pathein army base. We have many more missiles ready to launch. They will be used only if required. If the Shwedagon Pagoda itself is attacked, we will be forced to launch our enormous superweapon, 'Big Golden' to destroy the junta's headquarters."
"Big Golden."
