There are encouraging reports that some soldiers of the brutal Burmese military junta have begun to turn their guns around, defending anti-junta protesters:
Reports from Rangoon suggest soldiers are mutinying. It is unclear the numbers involved. Reports cite heavy shooting in the former Burmese capital.

The organisation Helfen ohne Grenzen (Help without Frontiers) is reporting that "Soldiers from the 66th LID (Light Infantry Divison) have turned their weapons against other government troops and possibly police in North Okkalappa township in Rangoon and are defending the protesters. At present unsure how many soldiers involved."
(BTW: Don't call the country Myanmar, nor the city Yangon: Those are merely the junta's names for Burma and Rangoon, never accepted by the democratic government in exile.)

Also, there's a report (second item on the page) of a coup underway in Rangoon, with the number two general of the junta, Maung Aye in the lead, and said to be guarding opposition leader Suu Kyi's residence:
Military sources in Rangoon are claiming that the regime's number two, General Maung Aye (right), has staged a coup against Than Shwe, and that his troops are now guarding Aung San Suu Kyi's home. A meeting between him and Suu Kyi is expected. Maung Aye is army commander-in-chief and a renowned pragmatist.

Our diplomatic sources are also telling us that Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved to a police academy compound outside Rangoon, where she is expected to meet Maung Aye. As yet, though, we have no independent confirmation of this development

Nice if true. Trouble is it could simply be a power struggle with another dictator waiting to take over.

Sure hope I'm wrong.

I'm sure that Maung Aye doesn't have democratic intentions. If this is happening at all, which is a puzzle, given how ruthlessly Burma's been cut off from the outside world in the last few days, I imagine that Maung Aye is either trying to negotiate himself one-man rule, or is dealing for amnesty for himself and his family after the revolution.

I think, though the Burmese may accept the idea of amnesty as a way of preventing last-ditch fighting, they will no longer allow generals, plural or singular, to run their country. The great thing is that they have Nobel laureate Suu Kyi, a great, courageous leader who is fully qualified to set things right. And also, even at 62, a real babe, IMO.

So, when exactly will Bush gather a Coalition of the Willing to eject these totalitarian generals and help establish democracy in this country, and put those generals on trial like in Iraq?

Exactly. Why is this point not being hammered by the press in the US? Or by the Democrats? Not like Bush is looked upon favorably by anyone except the Idiocracy of the Religious Right.
