Why is it usually conservatives, who often claim that the government should not meddle in people's lives, who are doing the meddling? Our federal health minister has announced that they will be getting tougher on illicit drugs.
I haven't touched a joint in decades, but at the next public protest at city hall I might just take a puff.

The conservative claim that they want to stay out of private lives is hypocracy pure and white as snow. It's electioneering at it's worst.
As to why, it's simple. Conservatives generally want to control your private life in the aspects where you choose to be different from the cultural status quo; they want to make sure you don't do anything they wouldn't do.
Why? Because you and people like you might be the seed that blossoms into full blown cultural change. And change like that is scary, increasingly so the older you get and the more you have vested in the status quo. That's why older and more affluent people tend to be more conservative.
It's like "I've busted my ass in this shitty system my whole life to get where I am today and I don't want anybody changing things around so I end up having to start over again." When you have security and safety and a predictable, stable life you don't want to risk it with silly shit like freedom and social justice, which you're old enough to have conceded can't exist for real in any human culture anyway. |
