Such a statement of our modern times, done in stark black and white with generic figures. Very powerful. |

| Thanks. But not too modern, nor too original. It is, of course, based upon one of the classic Charles Atlas comic book ads for his correspondence bodybuilding course. I must have seen his ads, including the other classic, the famous, sand-kicking-bully beach scene, a thousand times as a kid. Like Chick tracts, Atlas ads offered remarkably compact and memorable plots.
Atlas, whose real name was Angelino Siciliano, was born in 1892 in Acri, in Calabria, Italy. He moved to Brooklyn, New York as a child, and built himself up from weakness to strength, eventually establishing himself as a model and as head of a successful enterprise. By today's standards of bodybuilding techniques, not to mention the use of steroids, Atlas would not have been competitive. He died in 1972, but his isometric-like "Dynamic Tension" program continues.
Here's someone else's superior parody of the same ad:

What is amazing to me is how many classic advertising gimmicks were already present in that Charles Atlas ad. He talks about "discovering" his system as if it were a piece of ancient knowledge simply waiting to be found. Look at the buzz words he uses: "natural," "gets results," "just 15 minutes a day."
And then there's the free book. Not $1.00. Not $.10. But free!

| Ya just can't beat "free." He really put it all together, didn't he? And, from what I can gather, his system actually worked pretty well, for someone who couldn't afford weights.

I can only be amused by the lengths you atheistic evolutionists will go to to deny the Truth that is staring you in the face. Your hatred toward the Dings can not be more obvious. You seek to deny their powerful relevance to our modern times by trying to show their derivation from old mytho-heroic sources. But you will fail, because anyone can see through such nonsense. Your argument falls apart upon even the slightest examination. I will limit myself to a list of just the most obvious problems, or I would be typing all day.
1. In none of the earlier mythemes is there a character even remotely drawn like the Dings. The Dings have a unique quality that easily relates to all humanity. The others are very naturalistic and racially specific drawings, their appeal limited.
2. The main protagonist can not be more different between the Dings and the others. In the Dings he is hardly the typical bully, whereas in the others he is completely typical. The Dings show an appreciation for the subtle distinctions regarding the variety of bullying types, an appreciation completely lacking in the others.
3. The Dings themselves appear calm and dignified throughout, in contrast to the obviously contorted facial features in the other stories. How can you explain such a difference if the Dings were mere derivatives? As they say, "If the face don't fit, you must acquit".
4. Most of the other stories are drawn in COLOR. The Dings is a classic black-and-white. The few others that are not color show obvious water and waves, features not present with the Dings.
5. The older stories are taken completely out of context from their original sources, and dishonestly presented in a way to accentuate any slight similarities.
6. It can be shown that transmitted tales accrue details over time, and that the earliest versions are typically the simplest. If anything, the other stories are derived from the Dings, and not the other way around.
Need I say more? The Dings are unique, universal and relevant, and in no way derived from these earlier stories. Open your eyes to the truth. You may yet save yourselves.
(Edited to add #6 which is so obvious I didn't originally think it needed inclusion) |

Funny, leoofno, and... actually, kind of deep. Clearly, you understand my implicit meta-mission with the Dings.

Just thought I'd try out a little Christian-style fact-denying while supporting the Dings.
Don't dis the Dings!
P.S. I'm not sure I totally understand. I still don't "get" that Yoga one. |

| Well, my main idea was to demonstrate how pathetic the Dings were for body language. But I'll take anything that makes people laugh. Including a nervous, "is he crazy?" chuckle.
