It may be that the more religious a country is, the more crime and other problems they have. That's what this article seems to imply, though I've not read much of it. It could be useful in morality and religion arguments.
We can at least say, perhaps, that religion isn't the be-all and cure-all that its advocates claim, and that "atheistic naturalism" isn't to blame for everything.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.
Another example of this guy's lunacy here. |

Very interesting - from the Abstract Data correlations show that in almost all regards the highly secular democracies consistently enjoy low rates of societal dysfunction, while pro-religious and antievolution America performs poorly. |
This paper generally shows an inverse correlation between religiousity and societal well being among industrialized democracies. There does not seem to be any cherry picking, most of the correlations hold even if the worst case (the US) is excluded.
Since this study considers only industrialized "First World" countries it strongly points to religious belief being the cause of such social ills as high under 5 mortality and high teen pregnancy and STD rates, rather than these simply being a result of a low standard of living. It shows that the higher the proportion of atheists in a country, the lower the abortion rate.
There was no correlation between religous belief and homicide rate if you exclude the outlier of the appallingly high US homicide rate.
Another outlier was the high 15-24 suicide rate for Australia. I am guessing that this is due to a high suicide rate among young aborigines, similar to the high suicide rate among Canadian Indians in this age group. - Any info on this JohnOAS?
In a nutshell, it shows that those who claim that religion is a source of morality or that acceptance of evolution leads to crime and misery and promiscuity are full of shit. This paper was published in the peer reviewed Journal of Religion & Society, not in some angry atheist publication. |

Interesting enough, that one is. It rather supports what I've said about religion being the greatest evil any species has ever inflicted upon itself.
It would indeed, make a good reference.

Look at the differences between the colonialism of England and Spain. Spain was heavily influenced by the Catholic church, whereas England ran a more secular system. Now look at the state of their old empires today and then ask yourself where you would sooner live, in an ex-English colony or an ex-Spanish one? Canada versus Colombia, or Australia versus The Phillipines?
