Dave.....

Interestingly, I had a dream last night that a relative called to tell me that my father had had a heart attack and died last night. It was a vivid dream and emotionally intense, and I woke up thinking I should call and check on him. Before I did so, though, I discovered that he'd written an email to me this morning.
Well, I'm certainly glad that he's all right, Dave!

Why did you feel you should call?

What would your feeling (about the coincidence of your dream) have been if he had not been "all right", in the worse case?

I tend to have a lot of problem-solving dreams, either about problems I'm having at work or at home, in which I come up with these great solutions. And as I'm waking up, I'm thinking, "wow, I'm going to impress the boss with this today... It's gonna work wonderfully... It's... It's... It's completely idiotic, it'll never work in real life. I wanna go back to bed."

In other words, I'm not very good at waking up. It takes a few minutes for me to fully re-segregate reality and dreaming. I've even managed to incorporate the sound of the alarm clock into a dream once or twice, ensuring that I'd just lay there in bed while the clock bleated ineffectually. (I recall one dream where my alarm clock was a malfunctioning fire alarm - there was no panic, because there was no fire, just annoyance because I couldn't get the fire alarm to shut off. I don't know how long that dream actually lasted, but I'd slept through the alarm for about an hour that morning.)

Plus, I hadn't communicated with dad in a few weeks, anyway. It was getting to be time.

Well, in this case there was no coincidence. If dad had croaked, it would have been a coincidence. My dreams have other real-life people in them doing various real-life things all the time, so they're bound to match up with real life once in a while.
