Great Moments In Egomania: Christopher Hitchens Debates Shmuley Boteach

Last night, we journeyed up to the 92nd Street Y to see Christopher Hitchens debate Rabbi Shmuley Boteach on the existence of God.

It was the most cringe-inducing thing we've seen in a long time. Hell, it was something straight out of Curb Your Enthusiasm. We watched a clergyman, publicity hound that he may be, get verbally disembowelled by The Hitch.

Thoughts, notes and highlights after the jump.

Here is a short clip which is all that is up so far.

Video: Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and Christopher Hitchens Debate God

Boteach seems so outgunned that even this short clip is hard to watch. Looks like a massacre to me. Still, being a fan of massacres I would like to see the whole debate.

My initial comment is Yikes!!!

Reminds me of another debate that Hitchens had with Al Sharpton.

Christopher Hitchens vs Al Sharpton

It would be nice, I guess, to see Hitchens debate some more worthy opponents, even though I would probably still mostly agree with Hitchens on this subject. But oh well...

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

The Hitch is great.

Ignorance is preferable to error; and he is less remote from the truth who believes nothing, than he who believes what is wrong.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach sounded quite poetic, but used no logic at all. The louder, the more poetic, and/or nastier the opposition, the more Hitchens rises to the challenge. He's the intellectual soccer hooligan of the New Atheists. Hitchens kicks ass like the latest double-action, four-cycle, cybernetic ass-kicking machine. He has a vivid clarity of expression. He takes no prisoners.
