[I wasn't sure whether this should go in Politics or Religion]
A few months ago, Huckabee publicly credited God for his success in the campaign.
Yesterday, on Super Tuesday, Huckabee did best in the South. He's projected to win the Republican races Arkansas, Tennessee, and Alabama.
Yesterday, on Super Tuesday, severe tornadoes struck the South, killing at least 47 people in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky. (Quite unusual for winter, the season in which tornadoes are least likely to occur.)
Huckabee hasn't said anything publicly about what this means God intends now for his candidacy. Who knows, he may even use his incisive religious logic & interpret the tornadoes as the work of the devil, trying to undermine his success.
Just imagine if Huckabee's supporters put 1 and 1 together & came to a different conclusion, using a different but equally valid school of religious logic, that God doesn't want Huckabee to be president (or, that Satan does) & that the US will be punished in a similar manner for the next 4 years if he's elected.
Voting can no longer be restricted on the basis of property ownership, gender, race, or literacy. That's a good thing. But boy is it tempting to suggest that a "reality check" should be required for an American to exercise their voting rights.

YO: I emailed the following to some friends this morning BEFORE I read Zebra's remarks shown just above.
"Using The Reverend Pat Robertson's theological 'logic,' the reason several Southern states were battered by vicious storms is due to Mike Huckabee's good showing in the region last night, right? New bumper sticker? Shut The Huck Up. What's surely putting a chill up the spine of most affected Southerners this morning is that George War Bush is already praying for them and declaring he'll do all he can. That's enough to cause anybody to scurry back into the storm cellar under a blue sky."
Orwellingly Yurz also Sez: I then felt I should share it here with my skeptical friends, as well. Looks like I was first---EXCEPT after Zebra. My topic title, had it been the initial comment, was "God Speaks To The South."

I too had this thought, so you can be sure the fundys did as well. Then again they all credit God for saving them from the tornados and ignore what God did to those killed, Obama voters likely... |

What happened four to seven years ago didn't have any effect on the outcome of the election where Bush got re-elected... I don't think religious people are rational enough for a reasoned choice. But then, they may just be gluttons for punishment. |

Too bad you didn't post first. I like your topic title & comments better, and *bonus* you included a funny bumper sticker idea.
But I guess God wanted me to post first, since he didn't intervene by making my computer crash or something...
He still has a chance to intervene here, though. Our caucus is on Saturday. Batten the hatches, voting day is coming and boy is God mad! |

"Religious logic" -- what amazing images that contradiction in terms can bring to mind! Among many others:
And so forth....
Huck's not stupid. As long as he attribures everything to the Christian version of God, one way or 'nother, he'll always have an effective, political base -- the fact that said base is currently getting it's sanctimonous ass kicked and is in utter disarray not withstanding.
I think that it will be a long time before we see & hear the last of Huck's shuck, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I find him highly amusing.

Here's something interesting:
How McCain Can Convince the Right By ALFRED S. REGNERY February 7, 2008; Page A19
John McCain is not the first Republican nominee to give conservatives fits. In 1952, Dwight Eisenhower promised Robert Taft's supporters that he was just as conservative as Mr. Republican, as Taft was known. By the time Ike finished his two terms, conservatives were so disappointed they vowed never again to support a moderate based on vague pledges of conservative fealty.
Few stuck to that promise, and ultimately many threw their support to Richard Nixon, Jerry Ford, Bob Dole and both Bushes. Most feel badly burned as a result. So it is no surprise that now, when the conservative movement is the dominant force in Republican circles, conservatives feel very wary about supporting anybody who is less than one of their own.
Mr. McCain cannot get elected without the conservative vote. Unless he goes out of his way to assure conservatives that he is as conservative as he likes to tell them he is, many will simply stay home, as they did in 1976, 1992 and 1996, and regroup and find an acceptable candidate for 2012. Rush Limbaugh probably stated it as clearly as anybody when he told a reporter that Mr. McCain could not succeed as president, and that he'd rather see a Democrat fail than a Republican. Unless Mr. McCain makes some very definite proposals, Mr. Limbaugh could have plenty of company.
A little farther along he sez:
- Pick a conservative running mate early. Mr. McCain needs a young vice president with stellar conservative credentials so that conservatives can know that an acceptable successor is being trained and waiting in the wings. Nothing would endear conservatives more, and nothing would make it clearer that Mr. McCain is serious about reaching out to them. Rudy Giuliani, Joe Lieberman and especially his friend, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, will not do, and would send many conservatives over the edge. One option would be 47-year-old Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina.
- Get specific on judicial nominations. Although Mr. McCain has said he would appoint judges in the mold of Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas, he also said he was worried that Samuel Alito wore his conservatism on his sleeve. Mr. McCain needs to pledge that he will appoint judges who will interpret the Constitution based on the original intent of the Founders. That goes not only for the Supreme Court, but all federal judges as well.
Supreme Court & other judicial nominations are one of the biggest reasons not to put McCain in office. There is already a suffient number of fascists on those benchs thanks to a chickenshit Congress.
Huckabee is not likely to get the call for VP, even though Dobson has at last endorsed him. But unfortunatly, this too-late boost will add to Huck's credibility, which was failing largely due to his economic policies, among the religious conservatives.
Maybe he can get a gig at the Discovery Insane Asy... Institute. Whatever happens, we'll have not heard the last of him. Sadly.

To say that god can be credited for the outcome of any open democratic election, is a display of arrogance, an extraordinary detachment from reality, as well as complete disregard for the voters. Anyone who says that is simply not fit to run for president of the USA of all countries, and certainly is completely unfit to be the leader of the free world. But if enough people are ready to vote for him, I guess that's what will happen. Too bad it affects the sane as well. |

The far Right in the GOP, the pack of theonazis, militarists, authoritarians, and plutocrats that make up the faltering NeoCon coalition, is directly responsible for McCain's victory. Because they failed to unite behind one of their own, they divided their efforts between Romney and Huckabee. Others in the GOP are under no obligation to them just because they fucked up and got trounced.
McCain, however, truly can't win without their support. But since he has identified himself with George Bush (the Worst President Ever), has called for the Iraq war to go on for another hundred years, and has flip-flopped to support torture of captives, he can't win with their support, either. And it would be very luke-warm support, even if he got it.
McCain's screwed, the NeoCons have fucked themselves through public reaction to their abuses during the last eight years, and the GOP is doomed to years of obscurity, until it can finally throw out the theonazis and get back to its earlier traditional conservative-to-centrist philosophies.

YO: Here's another item that posts well in this thread. It's especially well-suited for those who continue to fail to perceive the similarities between the leaders of Iran and the current gang that's holed-up in the White House.
Iran Says God Protects Nuclear Program 6:35 PM ET
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) -- Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Sunday that God would punish Iranians if they do not support the country's disputed nuclear program, state radio reported.
