For all intents & purposes, with the exit of Romney, the Republican nomination is over. It's gonna be McCain, am I correct?
But now, when the nomination is all but a done deal, the World's Most Important Christian since Martin Luther pissed off the Pope is coming out with an endorsement of Mike Huckabee. And the question is: Why?
My personal opinion is that Dobson is finally gleaning the fact that the once-dominant Religious Right is no longer the powerhouse it once was and feels that he has to do something even if it's wrong. But too little too late; he should have been fluffing up Huck from the beginning. If he had, there is at least a chance, albeit perhaps an outside one, that Huck would have a shot. But as it stands now, if I am not mistaken, McCain has some 600 or so delegates, and Huck is sucking hind tit with less than 200, out of a total of 2380.
Is it possible for Huck to catch up and possibly win the nomination? Sure it is; it's also possible that Dick Cheney will join a Tibetan monastery.
I dunno, but it kinda looks to me like Dobby is being a good house elf for his admittedly huge congregation and is at trying to make up for lost time. Of course, his 'endorsement' is strictly personal so's to protect his Church's tax exempt ripoff. Clever fellow, that elf, trying to get out the vote in such a manner, however futile the effort might be.
Campaign '08 get's more fun every day.

I just find it odd that Romney is "suspending" his campaign. Thus far, when a candidate drops out, the headline is something to the effect that they are dropping out. But for Romney, the headlines as mentioned "suspending" which sounds (to me) less permanent.
Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, since I haven't seen anyone comment on it.
As for the McCain-Huckabee thing, it's odd since most of the big right wing blow hards (Limbaugh, Coulter, etc.) hated them. I don't know if they'll change their tune, but things are certainly going to be interesting for the GOP this year. |

| Perhaps he doesn't want to sound like a quitter in case he should get tapped for the Prez of Vice. Actually, I think he used the word 'suspended' as on a gibbit -- he might be still hangin' there, but it's all over never the less. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, since I haven't seen anyone comment on it. |

Call me Cynic (I'll not deny it) but these people are in it strictly for themselves -- I'd hate to have to share a lifeboat with any of 'em. They will say what their slack-jawed & drooling audiences want to hear, and that is anything that might harm an easy target from an ultra-conservative angle. Both Mac & Huck are easy from that angle, but when it comes to the national election, the blatherskites'll be all love & admiration for them, and death & damnation to the Democrat.
Oh, it's gonna be a lovely election; one that might not be so easy for criminal's in high places to fix.

Case in point: Yep, as it turns out, much of the virulently anti-McCain contingent could be won over after all. It took one speech, in which the senator reminded them that they agree with him more than they disagree with them.
I tend to rely on far-right blogs as a barometer of conservative thought, and the animosity towards McCain has been consistent and fierce for months.
And wouldn't you know it, many leading far-right sites, which have gone out of their way to blast the Arizona senator, sang McCain's praises after his CPAC speech.

Huck won more states than he was supposed to. I suspect that Dobson wants to throw as many evangelical votes his way in order to make them a must have block of voters for a GOP general election win. And that strength, if they can demonstrate that it matters in some important way (like winning more primaries) could make Huckabee a leading contender for VP consideration. It might also increase their leverage when the party platform is cobbled together…

| Indeed. If some of the pieces I've read are correct, Huck might well get the call. It is thought that he'd shore up support from the rancid wing of the Bible-thumpers, but what a ghastly ticket! And I'm not at all convinced that it would work. I think Dobson might be starting to lose his stuff, as they say in baseball. He farted around too long before making his mind up, and I wonder why.
This is going to be an election year like none other -- history will be made and presumed dynasties will fall. And we finally will be rid of the least compentent & most dishonest leader in American history as well as his conjoined swine, Cheney.
