PZ Myers calls Saudi Arabia "one screwed up, vile little backwater of a barbarous craphole." I always thought PZ was an Islamic apologist!
Here's the story: The illiterate woman was detained by religious police in 2005 and allegedly beaten and forced to fingerprint a confession that she could not read.
Among her accusers was a man who alleged she made him impotent. | I'd call these sadistic, insane theocrats "bestial," but that would be an undeserved insult to beasts. When the oil inevitably runs out, or the world stops using the dirty stuff for fuel, Arabia will collapse back into an utter squalor to match its degenerate culture. It will richly deserve that condition.

Yes.... Barbarism is alive and well throughout Islam.
I was in the middle of a really venomous writing on this situation and hit a block. So now I'll scrap it in favor of simply stating that the Saudies are governed by religious scumbags unworthy of any consideration at all. I'm convinced that we should have invaded them instead of Iraq; after all, 15 of the 19, 9/11 hijackers were Saudi nationals, as is bin Laden himself. And yet our spinless & corrupt, piece-of-shit leaders continue to suck up to them.
Fuck Islam. It's just another idiotic myth, albeit a little nastier than most others.

| Reading the comments I found #31 by Jennifer interesting.
Unsurprising.
All fundamentalist religion shares a basis to some not-insignificant extent in the fear and punishment of the Scary Vagina.
| It still puzzles me why women would participate in any religion that held them with so little regard. But I suppose that in the case of Islam it beats being dead. |

Depends on which creation story you read. The bible has two, told one after the other. The second one has women created secondarily to man, and blames women for the "fall". However, the first story has women cerated at the same time as man, and as an apparent equal, saying simply "Man and women, created He them." Some Christians claim that the second is just an elaboration on the first, a "filling in the blanks" kind of thing to provide more detail of how God did it, but they are clearly seperate stories with different vocabulary, structure, and conception of God and represent two different creation stories from seperate communities. At some point the communities merged, and the stories were appended one to the other. Similarly, the story of Noah can be seperated into two seperate parts, again based on vocabulary, structure, etc. This has been known by generations of Biblical scholars and is considered uncontrovercial by them. Funny thing is that most Christions don't know anything about it. Anyway, it would seem that the more egalitarian of the community's influence on the combind culture waned while the other waxed, and there you have it.
Oops, bit of a side-track. Sorry. Back on topic, I'm not sure Islam is any worse than Christianity was five hundred years ago. But I'm not sure we can wait 500 years for them to come around. Technological advancements in weaponry will put the world at considerable risk when the religious hot-hears get a hold of them. |

Off topic, but at least part of my earlier point is made:
Saudi Arabia's rulers threatened to make it easier for terrorists to attack London unless corruption investigations into their arms deals were halted, according to court documents revealed yesterday.
Previously secret files describe how investigators were told they faced "another 7/7" and the loss of "British lives on British streets" if they pressed on with their inquiries and the Saudis carried out their threat to cut off intelligence.
Prince Bandar, the head of the Saudi national security council, and son of the crown prince, was alleged in court to be the man behind the threats to hold back information about suicide bombers and terrorists. He faces accusations that he himself took more than £1bn in secret payments from the arms company BAE.
He was accused in yesterday's high court hearings of flying to London in December 2006 and uttering threats which made the prime minister, Tony Blair, force an end to the Serious Fraud Office investigation into bribery allegations involving Bandar and his family.
How far removed is this from actually funding and installing the terrorists?
