So a bunch of really old jokes re-formatted to resemble the description of an element. Gee, thanks for posting since this friggin' forum is already a major sausage party.
Maybe it would be funny to me if there weren't still men who actually think this way. But I work with teens who actually talk this way about women. I doubt anyone here does, but a lot of guys do, and it's fucked up. I'm not going to even try to classify men because I'm having trouble thinking up stereotypes of men which are on the same level as the ones these of women. Stereotypes of men (stoic, aggressive, stubborn, logical) are harder to make funny. Refusing to ask for directions just doesn't have the same derogatory punch as a money-draining woman. The money one is especially hurtful considering that women on average still make less money than men for the same jobs, while women also still tend to do more child rearing and housework. Yeah, this joke will be funny when there is total equality across our entire society, but right now it just makes me feel crappy. |

Whoops. Sorry about that. I didn't think that too many did think that way. I posted that to make fun of their attitude, not women!
Oh well, I didn't think. Heh. Big surprise eh? I'll just delete the original post.
EDIT: Since I can't seem to actually get rid of it, I just deleted what was in it. |

Sorry to see you cave to Miss PC. I did once, and alnost immediately regretted my cave-in to vaginal flagellation! The PC here can indeed be suffocating from time to time!
I'd love to see the jokes, I collect such things! Could you send them to me via e-mail or forum PM?

Sorry to see you cave to Miss PC. | You are trying to push my buttons. Any educated and intelligent person, such as yourself, realizes that the concept of political correctness is not just the pejorative that dull-minded people use when they don't want to deal with complex and uncomfortable realities, or that stand up comedians use to get a cheap laugh. PC has its uses and misuses. If you think I wrote bullshit, then call me on it. But if it just annoys you that I don't share your sense of humor and took this opportunity to remind people of some shitty truths, by all means, just keep making cheap shots.
I didn't ask ignored to remove it, so the idea that he caved is silly. I don't think he or anyone else here is misogynistic, nor did I think he posted it to make fun of women. I simply found this particular joke in poor taste and said so. This is a forum; people are supposed to respond to posts if they have something to say.

I think marf's comments were reasonable, and i also appreciate the way the_ignored reacted by pulling the post. If it had been a whole lot funnier, I think the misogyny of the gag might not have justified deleting it. But the joke wasn't that funny, nor was it novel. It even had misspellings.
bngbuck wrote:Sorry to see you cave to Miss PC. I did once, and alnost immediately regretted my cave-in to vaginal flagellation! The PC here can indeed be suffocating from time to time! | Clearly, there was no "caving in" involved, and I feel the suggestion that this was the case was presented quite nastily, bngbuck, and without a humor-related justification for that crudity.
Yet humor's dangerous. (Just ask a few Danish cartoonists!) It's often very difficult to distinguish humor from pure offense, partially because "good" humor often deliberately employs offense. It's a line that every humorist must cross, but he or she takes chances when doing so. I personally find myself wondering from time to time if I've offended sensibilities more than I've tickled funny-bones. (One post I did, "Women outscore men in college's sciences" was such a case in point.)
I also give humorists more leeway in areas like "political correctness" than I give normal mortals, because I recognize this built-in problem of their art.
But I think the particular humor that was removed was simply too crude and mean for its chuckles content. Then, again, opinions will differ.

Halfmooner wrote: If it had been a whole lot funnier, I think the misogyny of the gag might not have justified deleting it. | I agree. For example, the Monty Python crew have been criticized for their constant portrayal of women characters as hysterical ninnies. But until I had read that criticism, it had never occurred to me, and I always have laughed a lot at those skits where the comedians were dressed as women. The point was not to make fun of the female gender or perpetuate nasty stereotypes. |

You just like to stir the pot. | I'm a cook, and a damn good one. If you don't stir the pot, the seasoning doesn't blend and the dish gets bland and boring. |

Mooner.....
I am truly sorry to have offended you, of all the folks on this forum (with the exception of Filthy, whom I also regard as devoid of pretension and sham.) The idea that you saw my scatological reference as "nasty" just blows my mind, as the kids used to say.
I have no association base to contrast "nasty" with any standard that I accept. My life has been one of iconoclasm. and it shall so remain until my all too soon demise. To accept any of the standards of neo-Victorianism is anathematic to my very nature, and I will not do it.
To push Marf's buttons is one thing, she has not learned yet what button is connected to what circuit. But you most assuredly have, as evidenced by your wisdom and particularly your humor.
I am truly sorry, Mooner, and my sorrow is grounded in disappointment at the conventionality of your sentiment. Take that as an apology, if you desire one, understanding that I regret the limitations of acceptance that it implies. But, as you say, opinions will differ, and ours obviously do. The restrictions that we place upon ourselves are the only impediment to truly expanding our horizons! I understand that that applies equally to me as it does to you! |

The Ignored.....
I still applaud your post, and your balls in posting it, whatever it was, and I really would like a PM or e-mail of the text, or a reference to where I could find it.
I feel cheated of one the high pleasures of my cloistered existence, that of enjoying the fruits forbidden by conventionality, paradoxically one of the most annoying minor scourges of the 21st century!
Please, Ignored, PM or e-mail me the apallingly egregious material that caused this dust-up on a dinner plate! I will be pleased to reciprocate with no end of humor forbidden on these boards, if you enjoy such things! |

Well, I'm not upset, and need no apology, Bill, but thank you anyway. Neither Marf nor the_ignored have asked for one, either. If you don't see your comment as having been needlessly nasty or crude, there is certainly no way I could convince you. And I have no problem with iconoclasm, as long as people aren't hurt by fanatic mobs smashing religious icons. (And I don't accuse you of that.)

I'd be delighted to, but I don't know the number to call until the Ignored stops ignoring me and sends me this viciously salacious material that has disturbed the peace of mind of so many timid souls around here! However, request duly noted in my Things to Do Today! Or Tomorrow!

Any misogynist worth his salt could see on the even the most cursory examination of "vaginal flagellation" that "vagellation" would have done just fine. |
