On the uses and misuses of PC, if I had asked ignored to remove the joke, IMO that would be one of he misuses of PC, which is the idea that offensive jokes should be censored. But I didn't, and wouldn't have done such a thing because I am often happy to confront such jokes publicly because then the issues are dealt with rather than just repressed.
Bngbuck called me a name for simply voicing my opinion, and offers no other substance. The conventional use of "PC" as a pejorative allows people to end the conversation. It is similar to the misuse of the term "racist." Call someone racist in a conversation, and it is likely that their emotions will rise to the point that they can't or won't continue having a rational conversation. There is a similar effect if you call someone "PC." |

I can't believe this has gone on for nineteen messages. (ok, twenty now). Anyway, the site I got it from has a really cool picture of a forest fire.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

I didn't see the original post, pre deletion, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it before. Inspired by this memory, below is another bit of elemental humour that oughtn't bother too many people. Being an occasional public servant, I deal with a lot of this particularly evil stuff:
Administratium
The heaviest element known to science was recently discovered.
The element, tentatively named Administratium, has no protons or electrons and thus has an atomic number of 0. However, it does have 1 neutron, 125 assistant neutrons, 75 vice neutrons and 111 assistant vice neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together in the nucleus by a force that involves the continuous exchange of meson like particles called morons.
Since it has no electrons, Administratium is inert. However, it can be detected chemically as it impedes every reaction with which it comes in contact. According to the discoverers, a tiny amount of Administratium caused one reaction to take over 4 days to complete when it would normally occur in less than 1 second.
Administratium has a normal half-life of approximately 3 years. At this time it doesn't actually decay but instead undergoes reorganization in which assistant neutrons, vice neutrons, and assistant vice neutrons exchange places. Some studies have shown that the atomic mass actually increased after each reorganization.
Researchers at other laboratories indicated that Administratium occurs naturally in the atmosphere. It tends to concentrate at certain points such as universities, government agencies, large corporations, and schools. The element can be found in the newest, best-appointed and best-maintained buildings.
Scientists point out that Administratium is known to be toxic at any level of concentration and can easily destroy any productive reactions where it is allowed to accumulate. Attempts are being made to determine how Administratium can be controlled to prevent irreversible damage, but results are not promising.
Keep fighting the spread of this deadly element.
My apologies if I or someone else has posted this previously. I did do a search on the title, and found nada. |

Dave and incidentally, Marf.....
The irony is that calling out people for being overly PC is conventional. Poor bngbuck - can't stop being what he hates. |
So, I am to understand that "calling out" the overly PC is now understood to be more conventionial than actually being overly PC is conventional, is that correct? What is the latest convolution in pop culture that has dictated this remarkable circumstance? Or did you just make that up?
Further, are those perceptive fortunates, such as you two, that can discern the conventionality of the recognition of PC behavior, the new standard of non-conformity? If so, I will now, in my dotage, dedicate myself to the hell-bent pursuit of sensitization to those who declaim others that are involved in identifying egregious PC behaviour!
That way, I can soon (after tutelege) snidely remark on your and others callings-out of the nouveau conventionalists-of-the-moment!
And proudly reclaim my identity as the Iconoclast of the Moment!
Poor Dave and Marf[/b] - soon to be exposed as dull drudges of the new (day after tommorrow's) conformity! Pity! (brit accent)
Thank God H.L. Mencken died before the advent of the 21st century! He wouldn't have made it past February '00!

Just Me......
Come on, JM, sound off. Seldom does an opportunity like this to form intra-forumnal alliances, derogate further the already crucified, support the sacred cause of PC suppression (or exaltation, if that is your wont), or simply come out in favor of, or against PMS! C'mon, gal, it's chick-schtick time! |

The Ignored.....
Your absence is not being ignored! If you do not wish to send me the jokes in question (clandestinely, I won't tell anyone), at least tell me why! Pity poor Pagliaccio, I need to respond to Marf's implorings to "call her bullshit"
On face, that doesn't appear to be too difficult, but I really don't know what she objected to! |

bngbuck wrote: So, I am to understand that "calling out" the overly PC is now understood to be more conventionial than actually being overly PC is conventional, is that correct? | Yup. The term "PC" is a pejorative. From Wikipedia's article on Political Correctness: Political correctness (adjectivally, politically correct; both forms commonly abbreviated to PC) is a term used to describe language, ideas, policies, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to racial, cultural, or other identity groups. Conversely, the term politically incorrect is used to refer to language or ideas that may cause offense or that are unconstrained by orthodoxy.
The term itself and its usage are controversial. The term "political correctness" is used almost exclusively in a pejorative sense |
Also, I was not being overly PC. Note the definition includes seeking to minimize offense. I pointed out that the joke was offensive to myself. I did not demand that it be removed, nor would I have.
What, exactly, was the "name" that I called you? | Miss PC.

I'll bet that bngbuck thinks that if extremely funny.
I find it midly offensive. I see why the_ignored put it on the site though; it is funny that someone would find that joke funny.
