Most of it is tame, but all of it is old, lame jokes, and the bits that aren't tame are rather offensive to me. I don't get why it was put on this forum since it has nothing to do with skepticism, and the only connection it seems to have with general skeptic/geek culture is that it is jokes making fun of women and most skeptics are men. That's actually the main reason I - one of the few women on this forum - bothered to say something. I don't think the joke is wildly offensive. Just in bad taste.

Long ago, the powers that be here realized that people would want to talk about more than just skepticism, and so the "Community Forums" were born. The "General Discussion," "Humor," "Book Reviews" and "Moonscape News" folders don't necessarily have to have anything to do with skepticism, they're more for shooting the breeze. And we try, when topics do go skeptical, to remember to move them out of here.

I wouldn't - and didn't - say "more."
What is the latest convolution in pop culture that has dictated this remarkable circumstance? Or did you just make that up?
A focus on PCness has been a joke for at least 14 years.
Further, are those perceptive fortunates, such as you two, that can discern the conventionality of the recognition of PC behavior, the new standard of non-conformity?
Hey, I'm such a non-conformist that I don't wear all black. Very often.
If so, I will now, in my dotage, dedicate myself to the hell-bent pursuit of sensitization to those who declaim others that are involved in identifying egregious PC behaviour!

That way, I can soon (after tutelege) snidely remark on your and others callings-out of the nouveau conventionalists-of-the-moment!

And proudly reclaim my identity as the Iconoclast of the Moment!
Have at, guy. It's good to have goals.

Dave.....

I wouldn't - and didn't - say "more."
OK, now I understand that calling out PC is as conventional as PC itself! And this is unequivocal truth because of a movie fourteen years ago! Jesus! I'm so fucking out of touch, my dactylions are paralyzed. No doubt from excessive display to you and Marf!
Hey, I'm such a non-conformist that I don't wear all black. Very often.
As I hear your words, muffled through my nigrous shroud, the hideous truth of my abject conformity sinks in even deeper! Have you no mercy, Roman! Must you add further spikes to the ones already driven? Endovelicus, oh Endovelicus, they know not what they do.....!
Have at, guy. It's good to have goals.
Yes, but it is far better to achieve them. And I have failed in that as I continue to embarassingly display my unquestioned acceptance of the mundane morality of "thou shalt not offend".

My only remaining goal is still one up! And now I'm crippled!

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Furshur.....

Glad to brighten your day. And thanks for reciprocating! I never fail to get a grin out of your avatar - both name and picture.

Kind of like to know what "midly' means, tho' I hope it's not a perjorative

Yeah, my wife, daughter and I all found it hilarious. It doesn't take much to amuse trailer trash!

Dang it, I had hoped nobody was going to take that statement out of context. I wasn't trying to imply that things which aren't about skepticism don't belong on SFN. I was trying to say that the things which end up in the community forum usually still have some kind of connection to this group as a community, either being something personal about a member or of general interest to skeptics/freethinkers/geeks. I was just trying to say that the only connection I could make (maybe I'm missing something) to this community in particular is that SFN is heavily weighted by male participants, and that being the case, I found that joke more offensive than I would have in other contexts. If, say, someone had posted that same link on a general joke forum, I wouldn't have made the those comments, and honestly, I probably wouldn't have been offended. I just would have thought they were old, bad jokes.

I seriously thought about it for a while, but whenever I mentally hit on generalizations of men which are really harsh (men getting in physical fights with each other or being physically aggressive with women, men having their ego directly connected with their income and/or career prestige, fathers not being around for their kids either because they leave them or because they make their career their #1 priority), I get depressed and also fear hurting someone's feelings.

Edited to add: Sorry to be a downer. I guess I just don't find any gender stereotype jokes funny. The history of animosity and tension between the sexes is just too serious in my view, and far from being in humanity's past.

That's fine, to each there own. But to hear of someone living their life where they don't make jokes because they're afraid they'll hurt someone's feelings... that's what makes me depressed.

I do what I can. After certain posts, not saying which ones, it just seems a little tired, a little overworked. I'm happy to help.
