According to their one-day ticker, the S&P has taken two 90% dips this morning already.

I am so glad that I resisted the temptation of a couple of years ago and kept my little scrap of savings out of Wall Street related funds! If I'm going to gamble, it'll be at a table where I can see if seconds & bottoms are being dealt.

Captalism is great, but only if it's properly regulated. This is but another example the government trusting buisness to regulate itself, which is like asking my house 'possum not to devour the cat's food as soon as the lights get turned out for the night (actually, that's regulated. Cat's bowl is on a 'possum-proof stand).

I am not envious of the task facing the next administration.

I am so glad that thirty years ago I put my hard-earned little nest egg into gold and diamonds. Precious metals and jewelry can't be beat for ROI! Government bonds and treasury notes are great income and appreciation too, but they don't touch diamonds. Think of the carbon footprint!.... No, I guess that doesn't make sense! Well, think of the bling factor!

I'm just rattling your snake chain, Filth, don't take me seriously! Seriously, tho', what do or did you invest in, if not market securities? I know it's NOMDB, but what smart people put their money in is really interesting to me! If it's personal, tell me to fuck off, I will completely understand! It is NOMFB!

Anybody else want to reveal what investment vehicle they employ? Are there stock market advocates or critics out there?

Marijuana & dealing Three Card Monte.....

All but a tag end of my savings went to others in the family. What remains is in an interest-bearing account that I can quickly access in emergencies.

Standard & Poor's 500. It's a stock index of 500 large corporations. The Dow-Jones is a more popular reference for the happenings of the stock market, but it's an index of 30 (admittedly huge) corporations (think Wal-Mart, MicroSoft, and ExxonMobil), and so sometimes isn't as good an indicator of things as the S&P.

Must have been an updating error, because the S&P500 closed up a small ammount from yesterday. DOW and NASDAQ are down a couple points, but nothing like a 90% fluctuation.

I'm not sure what I should have seen either. I went to the link provided by Dave selected advanced charts for today by minute and never saw the 90% fluctuation. What did I miss?

I think (guessing here) that there was a CNN typo (like a decimal place or two off?) which only lasted for a short time, but which had the S&N down much more than it should have??

When I checked on it - at the link I provided - the markets had been open for an hour-and-a-half or so and there were two huge downward-pointing spikes on the graph. The then-current spike had a low point of 133-point-something. Not 133 points down, but 133 as the absolute value of the index (just like in BPS's OP). Eight minutes later, it was showing +3 again instead of nearly -1200.

Obviously, CNN fixed whatever ticker problem they were experiencing, and has revised their own history to match reality. In hindsight, I should have taken a screen-shot to prove that I (and BPS) am not crazy.

NASDAQ is the one that's interesting for me, since the company I work for is listed there. Ericsson.
