I had to post this because its cool. I've seen little bits of mummified dino flesh in glass cases in museums and its fascinating to note the texture of the skin. Apparently now they've discovered most of a whole carcass.

Story here: Workers Uncovering Mummified Dinosaur.

More proof of the dinosaurs living at the same time as the Egyptians.

What an extraordinary find! I wonder if it's well enough preserved that some of it's internal organs can be studied.

An unfortunate part of the article was to describe it as 'mummified.' Mummies are dessicated or pickled cadavers, not fossils. I rather suspect that the Usual Suspects might lean on this because there ain't no such a' animal as a 65+ myo mummy.

Well mummy also means "A well preserved corpse" in addition to the Egyptian version. Perhaps the term "mummified fossil" would suffice.

No, I wouldn't put it like that. Fossilization is actual mineral infusion replacing the tissue/bones whereas mummies lack this. Of course, this is not to say that an organism could not be mummified before beginning fossilization, perhaps even for thousands of years. I'm sure that happened in a great many cases, although I see no way to verify it. I do not think that a mummy could last for millions of years. Due to ever changing conditions, it would have to fossilize or be destroyed. What we have here is poor wording in the article, perhaps due to trying to make it more understandable to a very general audience. Were it addressing paleontologists, the word 'mummified' would have never been uttered.

Somewhere around here is an old thread discussing one of Dr. Dino's fantasies, among others, concerning a mummified dog found in a hollow tree. He claimed it as a fossil, much to the amusment of all.

I forgot to add that mummies can also be created by extended freezing, as seen in Siberian mammoths. These too, are not actual fossils, and so, I continue to pathologically pick the nit.

I stand corrected, though when reading the article I visualized minerals replacing dinosaur skin to eventually make a dino in stone. But I still just called it "mummified" without thinking about it. Thanks.

Mummified is still correct, the corpse is well preserved, though it still be a fossil.

Wasnt there another dino recovered with soft tissue or am I just having flashbacks?

Yep 70 million year old soft tissue

Nope, because the original cadaver is no longer there; it has become mineral. The same holds true for Dr. Schweitzer's specimen.
A North Carolina State University researcher and her colleagues at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center found out when they confirmed the existence of protein in soft tissue recovered from the bone of a 68 million-year-old T. rex. Their results may both change the way that people think about fossil preservation and present a new method for studying diseases such as cancer.

Dr. Mary Schweitzer, assistant professor of paleontology at NC State with a joint appointment at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, had previously discovered soft tissue in the leg bone of a T. rex recovered in 2003 from the Hell Creek formation in Montana.

After her own chemical and molecular analyses of the tissue indicated that original protein fragments might be preserved, she turned to colleagues Dr. John Asara, director of the mass spectrometry core facility at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and instructor in pathology at Harvard Medical School and co-author Dr. Lewis Cantley, to see if they could provide the “nail in the coffin” that would confirm her suspicions. That nail would be sequence – the amino acid ‘letters' used to make collagen, a fibrous protein found in bone.

Schweitzer's findings – and those of her colleagues – appear in the April 13 edition of the journal Science.
This 'soft tissue' is little more than traces of the original proteins inside the bone and the only thing suprising about it is that, now that the probability is known, more haven't been discovered.

But it is still a fossil, albeit with internal bone proteins pretty much on the molecular level, not a mummy. The beast ain't in there no more, for, as though it were gazed upon by Medusa the mortal Gorgon, it has turned from flesh to stone.

The Young Earther's have had a lot of fun with this'n -- it provides them with proofs beyond doubt that complete fossilization can happen in a 6,000 year timeline! Gracious-sakes!

Never give up, never surrender!

Ok how about this, 'Mummified prior to fossilization'

Yeah, instead of "mummified fossil," it's a "fossilized mummy."

I wonder - Hollywood made big bucks with a series of movies about "The Mummy" - first in the 30s with Boris Karloff, then again in a series of "B" pictures in the 50s, then yet again on the big spectacular wide-screen with computer graphics.

But to the best of my knowledge, then haven't made a film called "The Fossil". (Probably because there's not much a fossil can do, except maybe fall over and stub your toe.)

A movie about those poor Pompeii folks made from plaster poured into the cavities they left after being covered with volcanic ash might be interesting - if they came alive (probably by magic spells) - except plaster kind of breaks.

Yep, right on schedual!

I must admit that they didn't do the 'mummified' bit as I expected. Indeed, they even did a correction. But, they blamed it all on the Flood, as we all knew they would -- they loves them that ol' Flood, they does! And that is exactly where, to my expectations and evil delight, they scroo it all up.

Earlier in the thread, I and BigPapa had a non-argument over the fossil/mummy blurt in the article that ended with the suggestion that the carcass underwent natural mummification prior to being fossilized. That is exactly what I think happened because that state of preservation would require a dry burial, possibly from a dust storm or avalanch. Decomposition would be quite rapid under mud and it's attendtant moisture, and the specimen would be no more than another pile of bones, of a well-known species, possibly scattered, to slowly mineralize and inspire ennui in geology classrooms throughout the land. It wouldn't even rate more than a paragraph in a local paper.

And thus, from their own very writings, have we refuted the Flood yet again. Sometimes they're so easy, it's no fun....

Really? Kinda makes me want to be mummified.
