I found this over at the National Geographic site. Lot's of cool adaptations on these animals. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure out how to import a picture. Just follow the link and have fun...

| Look closely at this artist's conception of Microraptor gui, especially the hind feet....
You will note that it has the over-sized, turned-back, toe & ripping claw that is a trademark of the carnivorous dromaosaurs, including Velociraptor. This M. gui fellow is so transitional that it probably has an evolutionary bus-transfer stub in it's pocketbook.

Love that bunch of critters! The two that especially amazed me were the raptor type with the protruding front teeth, and the stegasaur type with the shoulder spikes.

How do they know that the Velociraptor was feathered? I'm too lazy to google it. I see that they found evidence that "Sinosauropteryx" had feathers at least.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

| Well, it's true that Jurassic Park failed to show them, but then, they misrepresented it's size as well. It started as an extrepolation from it's known to be feathered ancestors, and then just recently, direct evidence was found.Feathers Fossils of dromaeosaurids more primitive than Velociraptor are known to have had feathers covering their bodies, and fully-developed, feathered wings.[26] The fact that the ancestors of Velociraptor were feathered and possibly capable of flight long suggested to paleontologists that Velociraptor bore feathers as well, since even flightless birds today retain most of their feathers.
In September 2007, researchers found evidence of quill knobs on the forearm of a Velociraptor found in Mongolia.[7] These bumps on bird wing bones show where feathers anchor, and their presence on Velociraptor indicate it too had feathers. According to paleontologist Alan Turner,
| Another interesting find around the time of the movie was Utahraptor, which was large enough to be more in line with the story.
Edit: Clever ploy, Doc. I only just now caught it.

You know, it's really too bad that so few of these animals are what popular culture thinks dinosaurs were. Tyrannosaurus, and a few large herbivores, and Pteranodons (not dinosaurs) are the most recognized by school children and their parents.
There is just so much here, and fossils being what they are, probably so much more.
Oh well…
