Will and I just finished renting/watching the first (and only) season of "The Future Is Wild". It originally aired on the Discovery Channel. As much as I'm dismayed by much on the Discovery Channel in recent years (a lot of catering to woo with shows about stupid paranormal claims) this series was quite awesome. It was originally supposed to have a second season but didn't, which is a shame.
The pilot episode could be skipped since it is really just a quick overview of all the other episodes in the first season. From there on, each episode profiles 3-4 species that have some kind of ecological relationship to each other in some localized environment of the future. Cool computer animations of the animals are interwoven with interviews with the scientists predicting these fantastic future flora and fauna. I was especially excited to see then do something with one of my favorite animals - bats. But probably most interesting is what the scientist/fiction-writers do with future evolution of cephalopods (octopus and squid.) And as much as this is all science fiction, every single future species' traits are compared to some animal or plant today with such traits, so no new niches or adaptations are invented. It ends up being an awesome way to learn about evolution and ecology. Will and I found the shows highly entertaining and wanted more!
