Hi everyone, I think that every person has his right to live in a society no matter even if he was a prisoner in his early life. Most of the prisoners are racial or ethnic minorities and have difficulty in re-entering the society as they are faced with poverty and this leads to crime for which they are re-arrested are convicted and re-incarcerated and this adds a burden on the government in respect of tax-payers. What are your views on this?

torman.....

I think that every person has his right to live in a society no matter even if he was a prisoner in his early life.
Do you mean that these folks have a right to live in society if.....
they are faced with poverty and this leads to crime for which they are re-arrested are convicted and re-incarcerated ?
Of course not! Not until they serve the time necessary to expiate the second crime! They committed a crime initially, were convicted and paid the penalty, were released and, because of poverty committed another crime! They must be re-arrested, convicted, and pay an even steeper penalty because of not learning a lesson from their first experience! The fact that poverty was a factor is not relevant to the operation of the justice system! Many repeat offenders would commit crimes irrespective of their financial condition!

Maybe I don't understand what you are asking, but it seems obvious that society must exact a penalty for each and every crime committed, regardless of the circumstances of poverty or whatever!

Something more effective than prison time to effect rehabilitation is certainly needed, but the mind sciences have not yet progressed to the point of achieving successful rehabilitation of many habitual criminals!

What is your position as to the proper treatment of repeat offenders? Surely not ignore their second, third, and future trespasses and permit them to continue to prey on society with impunity?

I can agree with your position that we need something better than jail for rehab, but unfortunately, presently, that's about all we have to protect society from habitual predators!

KILL 'EM ALL AND LET GOD SORT IT OUT!

I think that a very large part of the problem is that so many prople are locked up for crimes that are essentially victimless, themselves victims of stupid laws. They are taking up space better used for real criminals and being stigmatized for nothing. Alleviate this situation and the matter would improve considerably.

War On Drugs = massive govermental stupidity.

It depends on the crime torman. It also depends on the person, if they want to rejoin society and live by rule of law then yes. They should be allowed. In fact, once out of prison, they are allowed!

I get what you are saying about poverty though. All the bullshit about more cops, more law enforecement, and more laws is a waste of time. The alleviation of poverty does more to lower crime rates than any other single thing.

This is a very good issue to discuss about as it is concerned with the human race and deals with the real problems faced in the society. The Second Chance Act is taken in this way and hope that it brings a new dawn for the people. I believe you can also express your views on this on save the left which is good place to know your comments on such issues.

Perhaps you could discuss it here instead of directing us to another web site with your only post.
