           	| Sounds like justice to me. Or is this a shot against free speech?

 | A federal judge in Maryland on Thursday ordered liens on the Westboro Baptist Church building and the Phelps-Chartered Law office.
If the case presided over by U.S. District Court Judge Richard D. Bennett is upheld by an appeals court, the church, at 3701 S.W. 12th, and the office building, at 1414 S.W. Topeka Blvd., could be obtained by the court and sold, with the proceeds being applied toward $5 million in damages Bennett imposed on church members for picketing a military funeral.

 WHAT ARE THEY WORTH?

In February, a judge ordered Shirley Phelps-Roper and Rebekah Phelps-Davis to produce information to determine what assets that could be used to pay toward a $5 million penalty against them for picketing the funeral of a Marine. He issued Thursday's ruling after reviewing:

#8226; A certified financial statement prepared by an independent accountant reflecting all assets and liabilities.

 #8226; Bank statements.

#8226; Copies of deeds for real estate.

#8226; A list of all of the shareholders of the church corporation.

#8226; Personal tax returns for Pastor Fred W. Phelps Sr., Phelps-Roper and Phelps-Davis.

A lien is a legal hold on property, making it collateral against money owed to a person or entity. It can keep the owner from selling the property or transferring title to the property.

| Interesting question ig. My guess is that the ruling has to do with pain and suffering, the compensatory and punitive damage part of the law suit. Speech is protected, but if it causes injury, that part can be open to litigation.

 | A jury awarded Snyder compensatory damage of $2.9 million and punitive damage of $8 million. But the judge on Feb. 4 reduced the punitive damage to $2.1 million, for a total judgment of $5 million. |

Why not question something for a change?

| Agree, although I'd tack on another mil or two and maybe a moderate public flogging for creating a perpetual nuisance and generally uglying up every community they visit -- which is at least partially why I should never be allowed to sit in judgement.| Originally posted by Kil

I don't think that they have the bread, and if they do, they're not about to just hand it over. I'm not sure (read: totally ignorant) of the appeals laws here, but I've no doubt that they'll work 'em like salt-water taffy.
