Poll Question:
Do you have a romantic relationship with somebody whose beliefs are radically different from your own?

p.s. Wolfgang_faust presented this idea for a poll

p.p.s. I had initially posted this earlier today, but I hosed it up while trying to edit it, so I apologize to those whose posts and votes were lost.

OK, I give up. I first tried to edit this darn thing to make it a little more clear. When I submitted my changes, it modified the entire topic and dumped all the replys. This time, I tried twice to get those darn P's out of the post (they should be blank lines), but it is just not working. Oy.

Yes, I'm an atheist and she's a Christian, but it's not a big deal. She rarely mentions religion, but someone who endlessly quoted scripture (and that kind of thing) would probably get on my nerves. For whatever reasons, we both find it easy to be tolerant of those we don't agree with (until it effects us directly) and neither of us care too much about convincing others of our viewpoints.

Boron, 1st of all, sorry about your PP. Potato chips might help. I voted 'None of you business', not so much because I care if anyone knows about who I'm with but that there weren't any other choices to fit other situations. BTW, I hate that term 'Significant Others', it sounds so lame. Not your fault, I'm sure. I introduce Dennis as my room mate or friend or business partner. Legaly I guess you could say spouse but OH YUK do I hate the idea of having a relationship like that with someone. I just think we are all separate and don't belong to or have to answer to anyone. What we do as individuals is our own business and who ever we have a friendship with can take it or leave it, other wise why would you be friends with them?

The love of my life is an Atheist like myself. I don't cultivate associations with non-Atheists, so I would certainly never have an intimate relationship with one.

AFA you daughter is concerned, teach her to say gesundheit instead of god bless you. It means the same in thing in German, but given how people are nowadays, I prefer it because hardly anyone knows what it is. Also, even though it may be eating you up inside, for now, let your daughter decide what she wants when she grows up. In the mean time, just kinda keep it a thing between the two of you. It'll keep your wife happy and that way, you can influence her your own way.
IMO, send your daughter to public school. Best way she'll learn that people are different. Among other things.

I am happily married to a wonderful woman who was Catholic and is now a Catholic Unitarian. She is on her spiritual journey, which basically means she is disillusioned with Christianity, but is not ready to give up her faith. It is not an easy task to change your system of interpreting the world.

<font size=1 face=

One more time--No quotes....

Jesus, perhaps you should concentrate on teaching your daughter how to think, rather than what to think. Teaching how science works with subjects like cryptozoology, UFO's, psychics, and even religions other than Christianity may help your daughter think more skeptically, without directly contradicting your wife's beliefs. Either way, your situation must be very stressfull to your relationship, and I wish you all the best.

Also, Jesus, you might consider having your daughter say, "salud." It means "to your health" in Spanish. That's about as non-offensive as politeness gets.
And welcome.

My ex wife, "The Harpy", as we usually refer to her, is a neopaga-wiccan-psycho-celtic-shamanidiot. Or some such nonsense.

Let's see; so that means she can summon Cthulu with a mental spell while playing basketball in Boston?

I couldn't vote, because I'm not entirely certain what's meant by “radically different”. My significant other is an atheist like myself, but we can have many a debate over other subjects. Such as ufos and aliens to a point where it becomes Scully and Mulder in the first seasons of the X-files.
“Prosit” is the Danish version of “Bless you”. And it means absolutely nothing today, but was once, I think, a kind of protection spell-word. Jesus> Maybe you and your wife should sit down one day, and discuss what brain-washing really is? Go over your daughters right to chose freely if and what she should believe in?

It was a toss-up between option 1 and 3. I'm married at the moment but my Catholic wife has decided that she doesn't want to be married to an atheist anymore - it is the main reason she wants a divorce. She knew I was an atheist when we were married, and she said my beliefs didn't bother her at the time, but about 18 months ago (we've been married 13 years) she hit some funky mid-life revival crisis. I actually tried going to church to save our marriage but I just couldn't take it. It didn't help my telling her I thought some of the aspects of the worship service had cultish overtones - whoooeeee, that really pissed her off!
