Hey, Andysnape, us dumbass rednecks like to make fun of ourselves, but get pissed when someone else tries to do it for us. (I'd put one of those smiley faced things here, but I ain't figured it out, yet)

It's gotta be the grease from all those Suicide Burgers at Mickey D's and places of similiar ilk that turns us into idiots. After all, isn't that where the term, "Fathead!" comes from?
And when you add American Processed Cheese...BARF!!

Oh Gawrd, yet another Brit who hasn't come to terms with the fact that England is now a third world nation. Be more respectful of your betters Sasanach.*

I'm only a 1st generation 'American'(born in the USA) but my mother was born in Canada. Maybe I have no right to say anything. I've never had much respect for Americans. Because of what I've always seen while growing up. And it IS now a 3rd world country here so I wouldn't be so quick to judge England (or anywhere else).

I am naturalized being born in Ireland and receiving my American citizenship while in combat in Vietnam. I find it highly offensive considering the history of England vs. the rest of the planet that a Brit should make such wise arse remarks. I also find it unbelievablely tasteless that the accidental deaths of those poor brave Canadian kids should be considered fodder for English humor.
Snake, if you don't want to live in the 3rd world you might try getting those scrap iron bathtubs out of your yard and off to the recyclers for a start.

LOL. I do my own recycling. That's why they are in the yard, with plants growing in them. I'd rather work on getting the billboards that are in Spanish out of the neighborhood and teaching people (not the foreign born either), to speak better/proper English. My room mate who is now a naturalized citizen learned, so why can't others? And the language he had to translate from is much more difficult then any latin based language. Hum, here's a thought. If they could speak better English and communicate maybe they wouldn't be bombing their own people.

As Slater almost said in his typically adversarial, though often refreshing and enlightening manner; quote: the accidental deaths of those poor brave Canadian kids should be considered fodder for [any] humor.
I think this is the real issue.

The death of those soldiers is not funny.
But there is an issue here. Humor is probably the wrong way to approach it.
It appears to me from what I have seen in the news that an unusually large percentage of our people get killed in ways different from what we expecting.
There are all kinds of accidents. Helicopter crashs, friedly fire and being killed while trying to defuse munition. That is not what we were expecting when we were told there would be sacrifices.
Maybee it is a good thing. Accidents happen all the time and the fact that they appear to outweigh the death in regular combat means that we are faring well in that area.
Maybe our expectations were wrong, because Holywood does not adequatly show us how wars are fought in this day and age.
It also could be sign that there is some underlying flaw in the way this whole war is being fought. Maybee there is a problem somewhere and maybee it is something 'American'. I can't say, but I doubt it is burgers.

Unfortunately, we can send a rather large bomb through a air conditioning vent from hundreds of miles away, but we have a hard time trying to decide if it is a good air conditioning vent, or a bad air conditioning vent.

Friendly fire has been an issue in all military forces since there have been military forces. As have accidents. Disease has always caused more casualties than combat except for western forces beginning about the time of Vietnam.
The friendly fire incidents now draw more attention because they represent a higher percentage of total casualties, not a higher raw number. When our combat effectiveness is such that deaths from enemy fire remain low, the friendly fire deaths assume a more prominent position, though there occurrence is no greater than in the past.
I'll qualify that last statement. Though this was friendly fire, it was not intra-national; it was international. The US Air Force has a difficult enough time coordinating efforts and communicating with the US Army; coordinating and communicating with the Canadians poses significantly more problems than one might assume.
The "Fog of War" may thin and change shape, but it will never lift completely.

I learnt from an earlier post not to hang too much shit on you Yanks.....and that was just about football....
However on a seroius note, you shouldn't make fun of the death of soldiers....we may not agree with all they do, however they are just pawns in a mach larger game of chess...
Some of things my dad has told me about World War II make me shudder....and realise how lucky I am to live in Australia where the only thing we get invaded by is New Zealander's looking for welfare benefits....

"The Dirty Dozen" was on television the other night. I remember being a big fan of it as a kid.
I watched it this time with great fun until the actual mission at the end of the movie when I realized they were glamorizing what amounted to murder and war crimes.
I don't know my point; it just seemed relevant.

Those guys who got whacked were from the PPCLI here in Edmonton (Princess Patricias Light Infantry).
Just so you know, the general feeling around here is that they died, fighting for what they believed in. The fact that it was friendly fire is not such a big deal. The guys from "my town" are digging up graves, going in caves, sniping, etc, and could get dead at any time. We know that, and they know that.
It's hard to explain the underlying sentiment in delicate terms so I'm just going to come right out with it. At least we're not getting killed by "them".
The comfort in that is that the west is such an overwhelming force that opposition is making almost no headway at all.
I feel for the families and the buddies, and the pilot. I'm also very glad more of us aren't dieing by "their" hand.
Know whut ah mean?
If you think it's work, you're doing it wrong. |
