It seems to me too much reliance on technology, with eyes on the computer screen and not on the target. I did ground target designation in the Gulf War, and those flyboys would argue the target with us, claiming the vehicles or buliding we could see with the naked eye did not match their recon photos! Too much Playstation!

Of course we're a nation of idiots. Half of our ancestors were English.
Two Englishmen are in a bar when an Irishman comes in and sits down. The first Englishman sayes to the second, "Bet I can get Paddy there all riled up." He walks over the Irishman and says, "Bet you you didn't know that Saint Patrick was a gutless Moma's boy."
"Why no", replies the Irishman. "I must admit I did not know that."
"You know how he got the snakes out of Ireland? He took off his shoes and they left on account of the stench!"
"My", says the Irishman, calmly. "I didn't know that either. The things you learn."
"Then I guess you didn't know that St. Patrick liked buggering sheep, either!" exclaimed the Englishman, getting frustrated.
"My goodness! I had no idea! Who would have thought it?"
The Englishman shakes his head and returns to his friend. "I give up." His friend says, "Let me have a try." He walks over to the Irishman and says, "Hey Paddy, did you know that St. Patrick was an Englishman?"
"Why Yes", says the Irishman, "so your friend was just telling me."

I once knew an Irishman who got so drunk on his trip to the Vatican that he kissed his wife and beat the pope's foot to a pulp with a coal shovel.

Actually the most widespread acenstry in America is German, which explains a few things.

Explain what exactly??? My Mum and Dad are German and I'm a first generation Australian. We are doing OK from where I can see. All four of their kids are hardworking honest citizens.
It's just those poor Poms realising that their empire has crumbled away to nothingness, the monarchy is irrelevant and they can't beat anyone at sport anymore. You dumb arses sent your convicts to the wrong place. We have the sun, sand, surf and large tracts of land. You poor rain sodden bastards have fuck all.
When was the last time an Englishman beat an Aussie or a Yank at anything. Christ, we just recently took the darts world championship off you. You can't even win "sports" that are designed to be indoors due to your shitty, wet climate. Let's not mention the cricket, it's been 15 years since you provided some kind of challenge in that area.

Friendly Fire.....Isn't Murphy's third law of land warfare.
Gezzam got it right. Technology makes the enemy little blips on a monitor. It's easy to get your blips mixed up. Fighting at night doesn't help. Poor training also counts. Too much time spent on parades, etc.
No combat ready unit ever passed an inspection, no inspection ready unit ever passed combat. Murphy's 6th law of land warfare.
I went over my thoughts on current military training in another thread. It sucks. It's been so watered down to avoid injuries and incidents that it really isn't training anymore. Reference the bit about the 101st pilots having to use huge spotlights to fly at night. I heard tossing flash-bangs in foxholes is not an acceptable way to rouse the troops anymore. I guess they're just shit outta luck when an enemy tosses a real grenade in there. There is a fundemental difference between the US and most other country's militaries. Our power comes more from technology than the troops on the ground. The troops pretty much just guard the equipment anymore. This means that current US military training revoloves much more around 'soft skills' like using computers and gizmos. Even the average grunt has to lug around no shortage of electronic do-dads. Militaries that don't have the resources of the US have to rely more on the individual soldier. Thier training reflects that by being more physical and dangerous. Like North Korea. Their philosophy is mass human attacks. So the individual soldiers have to be ready to kick ass barehanded if need be. They also carry live ammo everywhere. They are ready to transition from peace to war with the change of a magazine. The US hides all it's weapons and only lets soldiers play with them as little as possible. We're afraid someone might shoot their toe off. The US training budget (especially for individual combat) has shrank over the years to pay for all the high tech crap that usually goes tits up in a firefight. Another example: the M-16 vs AK-74. The M-16 is capable of nearly sniper-like accuracy out of the box. Training included 300 meter shots with peep sights. With an ACOG sight, I can ice someone from twice that. The AK-74 rattles when shook. It is made of terrible wood/plastic and stamped from crappy metal. A 600 meter shot with one? Ha! But, I'll take the Kalishnakov any day over that Fisher-Price toy of an M-16. The Ak will empty mags long after the '16 quits and is no better than a club. The AK was made for armies that needed a weapon that would shoot after being buried in mud, run over by a truck, dropped, submerged, and not maintained at all. Reliable when you need it most and cheap enough to oufit whole armies with. The M-16 is made for firing ranges. It's accurate as hell if you spend more time cleaning it than firing it. But a few grains of sand bring can make it a paperweight real fast. That sort of mentality is what makes the US rely on technology rather than it's soldiers ability to kill. Our method works pretty well. We kick some serious ass, especially from the air. But when it's eyeball to eyeball and muzzle to muzzle, our troops get shot up pretty badly. The third world countries we like to invade have no training other than those basic gunfighter skills, so they practise them alot more than our guys. Pound for pound, our troops don't stack up that well physically. We have too many political lobby groups that lower the militaries standards all the time to push thier agenda. I've gotten to work with a bunch of foreign military units, and while we had many times the radios, satellites, NVGs, etc- they all were at least a match for the US in man to man fighting. Friendly fire is a side effect of poor training as much as it is a result of the confusion of war.
