OK, minor correction here, 5 charged in the murder of Candace. Two are set for trial in September - the assistants. And Candaces dear adoptive mother - sometime following that.
Unfortunately, these scum were only given 16 years, the minimum sentences on the charges. They could have been given as much as 48 years for the murder of Candace.
Sorry, this is happening just up the road from me. The Jefferson County seat is less than 20 minutes from where I live. I'll try to keep you all informed as the remaining trials progress.

Yes, CO outlawed rebirthing therapy. Tho they did a lot of research and this is an unacceptable practice to most child psychologists. Outlawing the rebirthing therapy was primarily reactionary.

The official charges against the two assistants are child abuse resulting in the death of a minor...

These are some editorial comments and links to local news stories regarding the rebirthing trials.
Only rebirthing using restraints was outlawed, not the entire procedure. Damn!
quote: Editorial: Watkins, unremorseful Connell Watkins calls the death of Candace Newmaker "inconceivable." What's really inconceivable is her continued faith in the bizarre and brutal procedure she called "rebirthing," and her inability to accept that she is guilty of the child's death -- and that the child is blameless. The phony therapist, convicted last month of child abuse resulting in death and facing 16 to 48 years in prison, is the focus of a segment on the ABC News program 20/20, which was scheduled for broadcast Friday evening. According to a transcript of the program, the interviewer asks Watkins what she was thinking when she and three other adults wrapped Candace in a sheet and kept her from breathing with the weight of their bodies. "We were thinking she wasn't genuine," Watkins says. "And she wasn't. . . . Something happened we couldn't predict." "I was afraid that we really lost her, of course," Watkins added. "It was inconceivable to me." No. It is her behavior that is inconceivable. And her continued refusal to admit that the child's anguish was entirely sincere. June 16, 2001

quote: Therapist delusional
After reading about the ABC News 20/20 interview with Connell Watkins ("Therapist: Death 'inconceivable,' " June 15), I must agree with her on two points: 1. This has been a nightmare because her life and others' lives and careers have been ruined. Case in point -- the life and future career of 10-year-old Candace Newmaker. 2. She believes Candace died because of an existing heart condition. She's correct. Candace died because of the cold, callous condition of Watkins' heart. Watkins never shed a tear for Candace (or showed any remorse) during her many hours of testimony during the trial. But, she sure could wail "poor me" for millions to see on national TV! Wake up and smell the felony conviction, Watkins, and take some responsibility for your part in this nightmare. Ron Testa Thornton

quote: -- Evergreen therapist Connell Watkins testified Monday that she knows her practices are controversial and unscientific but they "release the rage" of troubled children.
Watkins said she called Candace "a mean little twerp," covered her mouth, shook her head and even cut the girl's hair in hopes that Candace would realize that the therapy was her last chance. Candace's behavior was so bad that her mother, Jeane Newmaker of Durham, N.C., was going to have to institutionalize her, Watkins said.
