For the details of this, see http://www.secweb.org/asset.asp?AssetID=213 it's called: The Incredible, Amazing, Illogical Rant of Cal Thomas. It's found on the Secular Web.

Excellent rebuttal. Should be required reading in high school for how to counter silly arguments.
He was always in Stars and Stripes newspapers when I was in Germany. Very good reading if you're seriously hung over, feel like you have to puke, but can't. Cal's columns can be very valuable.
IOW, another fundie moron. What an idiot.

I read Cal's pathitic, little screed a while back; don't remember where. I've enjoyed seeing it picked apart.

I gotta wonder:
Why do we bother? What's the point of the rebuttel?

Do we need their praise? Do we need their acceptence?

Face it, the fish-people are going to be hatefull and ignorent no matter what we do.

Why should we bother?

Well, it sure as hell makes me feel good.

Also, it might be the first introduction some future sceptic has to critical thinking. They might see that the arguments are wrong but not know exactly how to deal with them. People can learn rom this stuff.

Well, some people, anyway.

Cal Thomas:
April Fool's Day: The Atheist National Holiday

Happy April Fool's Day. It's the atheist national holiday. “The fool has said in his heart there is no God,” you know. I hope you've sent your atheist friends a card.

Well, I for one do not mind at all having April Fool's Day designated as an Atheist National Holiday. In fact, I kind of like the idea.

Traditionally, Fool's were unofficial advisors to Kings and such. The Fool was the only person who could tell the King the truth, as the Fool saw it, without risking being beheaded. It was the Fools job to tell the King the truth, while making him laugh.

Today, some of our Fool's often call themselves comedians. Again, their job is often the same as the Fool of old. To cut through the bullshit, tell the truth and make us laugh at ourselves in the process.

I think Cal, in other times, might have been designated Village Idiot. A very different thing....

You know, we have this same text on another thread where this Cal Thomas rant was first mentioned. This is almost a repeat of that topic except that it's better organized.

And Xev, while it may seem to be a waste of time there has to be a rebuttal to stupid statements such as the bigotted one from Cal. The entrenched hard core Christian will not agree with it but many moderate ones might recongnize it for what it is and it's good to have something out there that demonstrates not just that what was said was wrong but why. But Cal is just preaching to the choir, his choir, anyway and he knows what his audience wants to hear.

I think that April Fools Day is great, but we'll have to fight the serious hacker community for it.

Or share.

*Xev places fake vomit on a Bible*

As to my question, I suppose you are right. I'm a bit tired of debunking the same old claims, though.

But, what's an existentialist to do but fight on!

"The fool has said in his heart there is no god" is an argument from intimidation, not an ad hom, as saying there is no god is not an argument.

The way I look at is that while I might not be able to drill through the skull of someone like the odious Kacey, there is a lurker population out there that might glean a little something from my approaching-desperation attempts.

So, it's not really futil.

In other times I suspect Cal would have been designated as Grand Inquisitor. Also a very different thing...but not nearly as funny.

And that, in a nutshell, is why rebutting these folks is necessary.

If we ignore them will they just go away? Or will they take more and more power until they can do us actual harm again?

If you turn the other cheek you will wind up with having both your cheeks slapped.

If you ignore that ugly little mole it will turn into skin cancer.

They have to be rebutted so that they will know that they can't get away with pulling that sort of crap on us. "Silence is consent," we can't safely remain silent to being attacked.

The problem with rebutting someone like Cal Thomas is that he, and his philosophy are well summed-up in a headline, while a rebuttal takes some time to read and digest. Unfortunately, the average American tends to scan only headlines and accept them as gospel...

You know, you've got a point Hobbes.

Which is why my next book is going to be entitled, Cal Thomas is a Fucking Moron. Kinda plays off the one by Al Franken, Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot. Maybe Al and I can get a series out of this.
