That's not to say there aren't plenty of devout Christians (and for that matter, Muslims, Hindus et al) in Britain, it's just that by-and-large they keep it in their place of worship. If you asked the average Briton if we were (or even should be) a Christian nation, they'd probably say "Well, maybe, but really I'm not that bothered".

Yes, that's what I meant. You people seem to be more tolerant of others. Again, given the history of Europe with all the wars and conquering of one anothers country and the slavery, it's ironic the way you are now (even trying to combine your currency) and the way the USA is in it's intolorance.

Yes, that is somewhat ironic. And those same people's descendents went on to specifically guard against the admixing of Church and State in your Constitution, which makes it even more ironic. Perhaps Americans need to remember their own history a little better.

Just goes to show, one can SAY they've gone to a well known university but learning what was taught there is another thing. You'd think at least the so called leader of a country (P. Bush) would have the correct information before speaking in front of the public.[/quote]

More reaction, this time from the Christian bidness, er, business, community:

I haven't been able to find an online reference, but there was another story redounding to the glory of the Northwest on an area news show last night. Apparently there is some car dealer in Washington State who is so incensed over the Pledge brouhaha that he is charging anyone who doesn't believe in God $10,000 more per auto at his dealership. An action, he claims, nowhere near as bad as the one that provoked him into it. Not that he's likely to have a passel o' atheist customers suing him for religious discrimination.
File this one under "So you think you're a jackass?! I'll show you!"

Authority has every reason to fear the skeptic, for authority can rarely survive in the face of doubt.

Wow, one of the people completely misses the point of the lawsuit that started all this. He complains that the atheist that wanted "under god" removed was trying to impose his view on us all yet ignores how those 2 words got there in the first place when a small group decided to impose their view on us all. That is a big part of what ticks me off. A neutral view is portrayed in the press as imposing a view yet adding the words in the first place is not.

Hypocritical assholes is what they are. Removing the offending words merely restores the pledge to what it originally was and that original pledge did not require allegiance to god. I do my best to educate people on this issue in the hopes that people can deal with a country not slanted to one religion. I will not say the pledge with those 2 words in it...period. Anyone that wants can call that unpatriotic if their tiny, bigoted minds feel it's necessary but remove those 2 words and all Americans can say it with a clear conscience including me.

Someone else (from Canada) has something to say about this:

quote:
It has been said before. Let me say it once more: if your god needs the protection of legislation, he must be a feeble creature indeed.

Get him out of the laws. You know you can't justify his being there.

To the world, to my countrymen, and to the citizens of the United States:

A secular state is the only sane approach in a world in which a plurality of views on religion (including atheism) is the reality.
