Hey all, back after my wayward hyatus of working days and not being able to keep my schedule.
Really Six, you think your threat from a book that can't even agree with itself is worth consideration as to the existence of your middle eastern sky monster? Please, I need much more reason than that to turn around and deface myself before your xian god thing. Where's the definitive proof of your god? Can we test him? Can he come down here and introduce himself? And if he does come down and introduce himself, how can I be sure it's not a mass hallucination?
Anyway, good to be back.

Getting off the subject above, my favourite billboard was :
"You can smoke a thousand bongs or sing a thousand songs, what will make you feel better?"
Former or latter guys?????

Sixdays, so it was written by J.R.R. Tolkien, "If you really wish to treat with me, go away then come back when you are sober..." -Saruman, The Two Towers
If you don't have anything remotely intelligent to say, then shut the hell up. Your response is a waste of a few precious bytes of SFN's server space. And tell your god if he really wants to put butts in the pews, then he really needs some new marketing tactics.

I'll certainly try that. I do need some 'fun' in my otherwise mundane life.

You know, it would almost be fun to start putting up trite little sayings by Bertrand Russel or Thomas Paine to couter these goof-ass advertisements, but trying to reduce either of these guys' ideas to sound bytes sounds futile to me. For example, how do you fit Bertrand Russel's quote "Religion, as organized in its churches, is the principal enemy of moral progress in the world today" onto a billboard?

How about: GOD IS DEAD! - Nietzsche ?
It is short and there are no big hard to comprehend words in it. On the downside somebody somebody would probably completly miss the point and write 'Nietzsche is dead - God' under it.
Another idea would be quoting Allah, God and Jehova saying that they are Jealous or prone to punish people who believe in gods other then themselves. And then something like "Do you feel lucky punk?"
But then again, I think that witty sayings or logic would not work very well on most people. Emotions and comfortable delusions work better on most people and atheism just can't give as much of those.

Freddy N had some great sayings about religion. I'll dig out a couple:
Which is it? Is man God's greatest mistake or God man's greatest mistake?
A belief may be a necessary condition of life and yet be false.
Why a beyond if not as a means of befouling the Here-and-Now?
One should not let oneself be misled: great intellects are skeptics. Zarathrusra is a skeptic. The vigour of a mind, its freedom through strength and superior strength, is proved by scepticism.
It is all over with priests and gods when man becomes scientific. Moral: Science is the forbidden as such -- it alone is forbidden. Science is the first sin, seed of all sin, the original sin. This alone is morality. "Thou shalt not know" the rest follows.
When Zarathustra was alone, however, he said to his heart: "Could it be possible! This old saint in the forest hath not yet heard of it, that God is dead!"
There are also these: Humanistic adductions:
http://www.clwilliamson.net/human.htm
"Why be born again, when you can just grow up?"
"One can often recognize herd animals by their tendency to carry bibles."
---------- Every problem has a solution. Only sometimes the solutions involve imaginary numbers and make my head hurt. |
