I can't believe this. I got a virus from deleted fortunately I am smart enough to watch for this sort of thing and didn't get infected. This person is not bright enough to even mask their email which, of course, led me to their site(deleted). Believe me I will report this and do what I can for the person that sent it. Did I say for? I ment "to". But I won't resort to the sort of thing this person did because I just don't play that way. That's part of why I am so mad. Wouldn't you be?

What makes you believe it was intentional?

Be careful who you start blaming, @tomic. I've dealt with k l e z twice in the past 8 months at the office and we still probably get a half-dozen infected emails per week. Many of the newer worms will send copies of themselves to the address book recipients of the infected machine. Chances are, if you're dealing with one of these new worms, the person you think you got it from was simply an entry in someone else's address book.

You can check the header info on the message to find the actual originating point as opposed to the From line, which can be filed with anything.

Symantec's website always has updated info on the newest viruses. It should tell you whether the virus in question is capable of wanton address book violation.

Ok, my bad. After analyzing the file it is Klez which I have warned people about(the faked From line) so I should have known better. At least I waited before opening a can of Whup Ass

HUH??? I don't get any of what you are saying. It's like you are speaking a foreign language. I know what virus are and that machines can do strange things when they get them. I want to know what you mean by Klez. WhupAss, Faked From line, and all thoses words. And why did you put deleted where you said from? Thanks for any info.

Well, don't be so quick to... uh, not judge. Minutes after replying in a very nasty manner to a "Nigerian Scam" email (search www.snopes.com to find out about that scam) I was sent no less than five klez-imbued emails from different sources. I have little doubt where they came from.

That is part of the beauty of Klez. You can send off a virus and when someone comes to complain you can just say "It wasn't me!" I will check out that email more thoroughly but I shouldn't post URLs and the like unless I am sure.

I receive a letter with an attachment containing some sort of virus almost every day. Since I have the default address at SFN, I get the attacks. Last week a virus letter arrived with the return address of an SFN staff memeber. They are getting a bit more clever....

Fortunately we are(ok can't speak for Kil)smart enough to check out each and every email that comes in and with up-to-date anti-virus running. So we may be safe but it still pisses me off every time I see one.

Klez is the name of a virus that is presently very prominent. Whupass is a relatively non-technical term, referring to kicking someones ass. Faking, or spoofing the from line on an email is very easy to do. Mail is moved around the internet by a service called SMTP. In smtp, the sending computer contacts the recipient computer and tells it who the message is for, who it's from, what the subject line is and what the body of the text is. There is nothing to stop the sending computer from lying about any of this. So it's easey to send a message that claims to be "From" another person.
The Klez worm looks at your email address book, picks a name, and then mails itself to others pretending to be From that name. So if I get the Klez worm in an email that says atomic@skepticfriends.org, it doesn't really mean that atomic sent it, but rather that it sent itself from a PC belonging to someone who had atomic in their address book.
Atomic substituted the word "deleted" for the name and site of the person he received the infected message from because he is a responsible admin who doesn't want to accuse a person of intentionaly sending a virus without verifying it. He jumped the gun somewhat in posting their name, and has moved to correct that error.

LOL. I very much appreciate your explanations. I may not remember all of it but it was very clear. And it helps to understand what's being talked about. Thank you so very much.

This is all kind of sad. These people who send such trash to hurt others do not seem to have any *reason for being* other than to play nasty tricks on innocent people. They are very, very sick and evidently lead miserable lives wreaking havoc on unsuspecting people.
I delete almost every email message I receive and never download anything which possibly comes from strangers. I can tell from the messages whether the senders are friends of mine or not. I have good protection for my desktop for those who temporarily fool me.
I really feel sorry for crackers. They need to *get a life* for themselves. These poor things do not seem to have interesting lives. Spending one's life hurting others is a stupid way to go.
