Sorry, I can't read [four or five books on the subject]. It would take far too long. I don't trust research like that anyway.
The only other times I've seen these comments they've been made by anti-skeptical, anti-evolutionist Christian fundamentalists. Their "studies" of the Bible result in their "observations" that the earth is only 6,000 years old, etc.

Wait. Please. Please wait. I thought that it was a well established fact that I. Newton once, in contempt and disgust toward his religiously zealous peers, sat down over a cold, boring winter+ and, using the Bible literally, computed, using the bibical times as given (--and Enoch lived 2,856 years; etc.--), thence determining that The Beginning occurred 4,004 (or so) years ago.
Isn't this all well-established? Well known? |

Yes, yes. Thank you. I meant to type "4004 B.C." but somehow it didn't come out that way.
I like my version better but don't doubt that yours is the right one. |

Hey, credit (or blame) where credit (or blame) is due, right? Newton was certainly no poster-boy for skepticism of religion, but saddling him with responsibility for anti-scientific arguments which weren't his isn't exactly fair. |

quote: [b]Now Pink Floyd might be called "GREAT [20th Century] MUSIC". Does anyone REALLY have tastes that run to Gershwin, et alles?[b]
To each his/her own. Gershwin's great and is still popular with many people. I think that Pink Floyd may suffer in the long run. Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, et al., are still being played regularly--centuries later. Popular music usually has its day and then is heard no more. I, myself, am never bothered by the tastes of others, except when I am forced to listen to them, particularly loudly and ad infinitum! Then again, I am prepared for their loud music: My wonderful Bose QuietComfort Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headset takes care of that permanently. I simply flip a switch -- and peace and quiet prevail. I never need worry about going deaf from my own listening to music.
At the same time, I am not bothered by the ignorance of others, except when it is being forced upon me (i.e., such as Creationism, ad nauseum).
However, in the case of Skeptic Friends Network and other sites on the Web, one can skip over anything which is offensive or boring (and the same can be said for anybody wishing to avoid reading my posts).

Guess you don't drive in a lot of traffic or live on a street where morons drive by with their radios blasting disgusting noise. How could anyone not be bothered by that? And if not, I'd like to know how they avoid the feeling of wanting to kill and mame anyone who listens to rap crap. If it were legal my preparation would be to practice target shooting on them. Good thing I don't own a gun. |

Oh, I live in an apartment complex. I once had a neighbor above me who played his stupid music loudly. I simply put on "Bach's Cantata & Fugue" and blasted it for a few seconds to let him know that he would not win. Eventually, he moved to a house where he could play his music without having problems with neighbors. Just today, some guys were playing their music in their car music system -- mostly heavy beats --. I called out to them about it and they stopped. Sometimes they bother people in the wee hours of the morning. My new neighbors and I call out to them to stop and usually they do.
The justice about all of this is that all people who abuse others with their loud music are going to go deaf someday (usually sooner than later). They hurt themselves. Since I purchased the noise-cancelling earphones from Bose Wave Radio, I can survive.
I would never play my own favorite music loud to disturb my neighbors. It is just one of those things. Jerks live with jerks 24 hours a day and cannot get away from themselves. They are the ones who suffer.
It is not the music, it is the loudness and the forcing of others to listen whether they like it or not. Since I cannot sleep with the Bose Noise-Cancelling Earphones, there are some limitations.
I am not, in any way, dictating taste to anybody. If I selected my husband carefully, it was intended to make harmony in our relationship. It is limiting, but necessary, to have compatibility in any close relationship. I also insisted (to myself) that my husband have my same religion (no religion). My late husband often stated that he would have liked to be able to be religious, but it was impossible for him to believe in such things.
The idea is to have harmony in a relationship. There are going to be differences, but the big ones can, at least, be avoided.
