| While I don't disagree with your point, Orpheus, I have a feeling that if our armed forces consisted of old men, the politicians really would be sending them out to be maimed and killed. The idea, of course, is to bring as many "good guys" back alive as is possible, and still win the war. Young, healthy and strong troops have gotta have a higher survival ratio than older, sicker and weaker soldiers would. :) |

Dave, us old farts are way to smart to get sucked in to this sort of madness; most of us, anyway. That's why all armed forces everywhere need the kids. I wonder: what is the average age of the Palistinian, suicide bombers? And the shoe-bomber idiot (can you imagine having a blasting fuse burning down the side of your foot?!! Man, those things are HOT!)?
Us old farts like to send the kids off to get wasted for us. That way, we can get still older.

I'm just sayin', anyone who might send 300,000 80-year-olds off to war shouldn't expect more than a dozen of them to come back home (for whatever reason). If you're going to have a military, it's only logical to stock it with young and strong people.

Well, I dunno, now. Us old farts are pretty crafty and treacherous. How do you think we've managed to get so old,(hehehe)?
Physical qualities aside, the younger a person is, the more susceptable he/she will likely be to boot camp brain-washing. They lack the world experience of older people. I think the worst company a drill instructor could find himself afflicted with would be a bunch of draftees in their mid 30s to early 40s, people who've been around a bit. Some may have already "seen the elephant." They are used to doing their own thinking and will most likely continue to do so.
Younger folks, 17 to 20 or so, are far easier to deal with as they haven't been around long enough to have experienced a whole lot. Me, I joined at age 17. What an impressionable, little shithead I was! And how easily that Chief Boatswain's Mate scared the bejabbers out of me and all my fellow boots!
You are right, of course. Only youngsters make effective fighters due to better physical toning and mental suseptibility. Nobody would be stupid enough to send me nor anyone like me back into the fray.

That's why I wrote "for whatever reason." I would expect 90-95% of the 80-year-old troops to just pack up and leave for another country after being dropped off for deployment, with thousands of wrinkly middle fingers aimed towards their old government. |
