April was an exciting month for Religion in the News. The pope bashed Protestants. Protestants bashed Muslims. Muslims protested the appearance of a Protestant at the U.S. Pentagon; they protested the appointment of a Jew (i.e., a member of the Jewish community) to the United States Institute of Peace. In Iraq, Muslims cheered and jeered U.S. soldiers. Then they killed some Muslim ministers in a mosque, while some Protestants prepared their own armies for a spiritual assault on Muslims.

Pretty good. Gave me a chuckle, it did.
But hey, it ain't nothin' out o' the ordinary. The churches have been pulling this sort of insane nonsense for as long as there've been churches. Indeed most if not all believers in the metaphysical will happily attack other believers who think differently, even though either belief is no more creditable than the other.
Fun to watch them, though.

I would be inclined to suggest that a vast majority of religious Canadians accept members of other faiths and their practices, and I'm sure the same goes for those of any other nationality. It's only when the State produces propaganda that inspires the majority population to feel attacked that people lash out against others. I know many people who are of muslim, catholic, protestant and jewish faith who co-exist happily. It is not the church which condemns other faiths, but the ignorence of the people who practice them who are at fault. |
