It's hard to rap one's head around the idea of a 2000 foot wave.

I'm sorry, I really should apologize for my titanic pun, I knew it was destined to be a...sinker...from the get go.

The question is, how was it measured and how accurate is the figure? I too find a wave over 1/3 of a mile high a bit much.

But, geological features can do strange things to the oceans. The tides in the Bay of Fundy (Nova Scotia, a favorite place of mine) can be as much as 40 feet, the highest in the world. All due to the configuration of the bay. The tide comes roaring in like a charge of 00 buck from a shotgun. I've been amazed every time I've seen it.

So, I can't say it ain't possible, but it sounds a little fantastic.

They measured the figure by the tree line. The wave took out 1720 feet of trees, and any thing else in its path. It is quite fantastic when you try to visualize it.

I must have mis-read the article on the measurements. Ok, now I think I understand. This wave went 1720 feet inland. That I can readly grasp. It wasn't the higth of it, rather how far it went.

Still, a BIG one!

Yeah that's right, they measured the waves run up. Because of the steep face, and other factors they came up with that number.

That's not how I read it, filthy. The wave did rise to 1720 feet in height, but that's at the inland end of an enclosed bay. Think of the way a wave in your bathtub will rise when it hits the far end of the tub, and you'll have a better picture of what happened.

Hm, yes.

At sea, you can ride over a tsunami and never know it was there. It does not become apparent until it hits shallows like the continantel shelf. As the shelf shallows, the wave becomes higher until it makes landfall. At which point, it acts like any other wave, breaking and crashing down.

I ain't saying it can't happen, geological conditions and so forth, but 1/3 of a mile high is a lot of wave.

Running short of time right now. I'll re-read the article a little later.
