I found this article, Trading on fear, in which it is revealed that, from 'Hummers' to war, we've been the victims of manipulation by advertisors, the media, and politicians who are aware that our fear can drive us to make irrational decisions. I expect many of you will be as outraged as I am. This just curdles my milk!

Can't say I am really suprised. The biggest motivators for sales, scandels, and everthing in between stems from basic human motivations. Fear, sex, security, food, power, humor, and death.
Governments have always been in the buisness of selling something the public doesn't want. Unfortuantly, war and crisis makes the sale easier than normal. |

I coined the term "Hollywoood/Madison Avenue Cultural Axis" well before 9-11 and Bush's Axis of Evil speech. See Culture of Fear by Barry Glassner. On the other hand, it is possible that The Guardian represents a similar kind of manipulation, the commercial exploitation of radical politics. See The Conquest of Cool by Thomas M. Franks. |
