Odd, is it not, how the human mind works. About a week ago, the light bulb in my ice box sighed and died. Didn't get around to replacing it until this morning. During that time, groping about the ‘fridge with a flashlight, I had the uneasy feeling that somehow the whole machine had rolled craps. I'd even put my hand in to be sure everything was still cold.

That light, it turns out, is more than merely a cheerful illumination to allow me to easily locate the Jim Beam jug, the half-gnawed, chicken cadaver, the yogurt (yeah, yogurt! Wanna make sompin of it?), the all-but-empty bottle of Night Train left by an ex-girlfriend, and the Pyrex bowl containing that strange, hairy, blue-green substance that everyone is afraid of. Yes, it's more than that. The light, it would seem, is also a sign of proper order and function, even though it has nothing to do with the refrigeration unit itself, which never knew the stupid thing was ever out.

So, I wonder: is this one way a superstition might get started? And if so, how many other odd, little occurrences scattered about my life portend far more than they actually represent? Have any of y'all ever experienced a sort of low-grade apprehension that all was not well due to some minor and pretty much irrelevant occurrence?

I dunno. I do know that, by the blistered, blue balls of Beelzebub, my ‘fridge is working! I can tell. when I open the door, the light comes on.

It is clear to me, filthy, that electronics work because of the smoke that is inside them. If you let the smoke out, often they'll just quit working right, and sometimes they'll even catch fire (I hypothesize that it's due to friction from the smoke escaping so fast). SEDs (Smoke-Emiting Diodes) are notorious for causing system-wide failures.

Yaeh, I've got some primo buds if you need them that badly...

Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it's a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.

Well, I dunno, Snake. About a year ago, my garbage-grinding cat turned it down and my resident opossum fled in terror from it. I'd mail it to ya to try, but I doubt it'd gat past the postal inspectors. I would probably get busted for being the anthrax terrorist.

Okay, open up your computer, with it still plugged in and turned on, and jam a metal fork into the big green circuit board repeatedly, until you let the smoke out of one or more components. You'll be able to see, or at least smell, when you've been successful. After that, your computer will, most likely, not function properly, because it is essential to keep the smoke inside the electronics.

And it should go without saying, filthy, that the proper term for that little thing inside your 'fridge is not "light bulb," but is, instead, "dark sucker."
