Some bible thumbers are having a go at me for celebrating christmas. How about you guys?

| We've had that thread before, I think, if you want to explore that you might do a search. I don't want to have anything to do with Christmas. Nothing about Christmas is appealing to me. However, it is a secular holiday, and if you enjoy it, enjoy it. Why would they have a problem with that? Do they have fun at Halloween? |

I enjoy Christmas, although the lead-up to it gets big-time tedious. The kids and grendthugs come by on Christmas eve and we have a lot of fun. By the time they leave, I'm usually about half drunk. It's a good thing.
No, the local fundies give me no grief over it. They all know me -- I live in a small, rual community -- and we have a sort of a mutual co-existance pact, actually a rather friendly one. I get witnessed occasionaly, but that's about it.
Hell, Veg, If you have the asshole style of fundie, just tell them to fuck off. It's none of their business.

I love Christmas. I celebrate it exactly as I please. I buy presents, I bake cookies, I spend time with my family.
The spirit of Christmas should transcend the divisive BS of the *cough* holy.

Hehe... I too enjoy Christmas for part of what it is: A couple of days off, to spend with family, friends, and loved ones. And to recieve gifts of course 
I consider "The birth of Christ" and Santa Claus minor distractions, and just enjoy it all.
I wonder if Santa visits Fundie(tm) families... It would be herecy, wouldn't it? |

I love Christmas, too. My wife's family and their in-laws all gather for a 12-15 hour party that spans three houses across a 50 mile swath of New England. Good company, good food, and lots of laughter for an entire day. Really recharges the mental batteries in preparation for winter.
The rare fundie who poo-poos this secular celebration is heartily wished a "Salacious Saturnalia".

Christmas is great. I love the spirit and the attitudes (except the fight for the Must have toy).
For our fundy friends don't forget the evil influence of Santa Claus who is distracting us from the real meaning of Christmas. It is not an accident that the spelling of SANTA is so close to SATAN!
For our non-fundy friends, "lets put the X back in X-mas"! I hope Solstice Claus brings lots of great gifts!

I don't understand? Why should they care?
If you are asking do any of us celebrate it, then the answer is yes.
I do because my birthday is just at that time. Not on the 25th but within a few days. So I rather like that everyone puts up colored lights and sings songs for me.
Even if it wasn't MY birthday I'd still give gifts and put up a tree. It's fun. And the gifts or cards are for reconizing and in some way paying back the kindness of others from durning the year. In Thailand they give baskets of fruit on and around January 1. So the 25th or whatever day is chosen, it's nice to have a time to acknowledge friendships and remember people who you don't always get a chance to be with. |

Did someone say Halloween? My most favorite holiday. It's the only time I can go out and people don't ask, 'Is that your face or are you wearing a mask?'......they just assume.  |

In Sweden, Halloween is called "All Saints' Day". We put lit candles on the graves of dear but departed loved ones in solemn contemplation, in remembrance of their lives, and perhaps wallow in self pity for the loss we have suffered.
It'a magnificent sight seeing the graveyard in the evening being lit up by hundreds of candles, flickering in a slight breeze, reflecting off the occasional frost.

That does sound like a sight to see. As a photographer I can imagine what a nice picture it would make. I'm sure there have been many taken.
Seems that many cultures have days of respect for the dead, that way.
I think others can explain better since I don't know a lot about the Christian religion but isn't Nov. 1st All Saints Day? And Halloween is All Hallows eve. Eve being the key word. Not sure what the idea of the day is, other than what you just said...showing respect for the dead. |

i agree with snake ..christmas is fun either you believe or not..love is in the air!!!..i personally like the fact that perhaps (ok from 1000-0 i give him 0.0001) there is a man called santa clawy (ok i m a little bit influenced by nightmare before christmas) hehe that wanders and gives gifts and makes miracles..(of course i always was confused because here santa Basilis day (for you santa Clause) is on the 1 January (not 25 December) and i don t know when to expect him!! he he
as for Halloween ...we don t have halloween like you (trick or treat) we call it Apokries and celebrate it among the last days of february and the first days of march..we just disguise like something and we go around and party, dance etc
candles in the graveyard?? bbrr..although it could be interesting to be night in a graveyard with other people and celebrate without being any weirdows or smthing

"Fundies" is short for fundamentalist, as in religious fundamentalist. Foremost Christian Fundamentalist, since they are usually either trying to convert you, or condemning you as a heathen.
I suppose this is very generalized and stereotypical.
Anyway, we use it as a reference to Christians that has abandoned their god-given power of reason, and believe such nonsense like God created the world 6000 years ago, that there was a worldwide flood where all dinosaurs died and only Noah and his family survived, and other stories of the Bible. |

For clarification on All Hallows' Eve, it is supposed to be on the Fall Equinox, and it is the night before All Saint's Day. Hallows' Evening is the transition time of the seasons; the time when the boundary between the living and the dead is the thinnist. This is the time for all the spooks, spirits, and sprites to frolick before they are banished the next day by the good holy saints.
On Hallowe'en, if you are to go out, you should go dressed as a spook, so you may either look like one of them (and not get eaten) or (better yet) scare them off by being even more frightening than the spirits. It was also a good idea to put food and gifts out so the sprites do not play malicious tricks on your household.
Now, we don't believe in spooks, but we still like to dress up when we go out on that evening. We don't believe in sprites but we still give treats to those who wander around so they don't play tricks on us.
So, on behalf of all the pranksters out there, I say, "Happy Halloween," and "Trick or Treat!" |
