...Thanks to Torsten for providing a little background...I knew there had to be a story behind Rosen's monolog re Velikovsky. Now that you've filled me in, it makes sense. Sort of a pre-emptive strike.

rubysue ("By the way, have you heard of Dr. Michio Kaku?"): Good gosh, I heard Kaku on the infamous Art Bell show and subsequently took him to task via email for asserting that the entire Universe is inside a black hole. He pointed out that it fits one definition of a BH in that no light can escape it, and accused me of defining a BH in unnecessarily narrow terms. I have always felt he leans too much toward sensationalism when communicating physics to general audiences, and your information reinforces that opinion.

Bad sad news folks. After several quiet and peaceful days, the Pipmeister is back. Still has his knickers in a twist over his perceived anomolies. Now, are we all going to behave ourselves?
On a much brighter note, we are having so much fun with our new telescope. Last night was clear and beautiful. We were like a couple of kids on their first trip to Disneyworld. Tonight looks to be the same, so we'll probably be back out on the deck freezing our butts off. Can't wait.

Great news about the telescope! As for drainpipe, I get to practice ignoring him, even though a variety of new insults have occurred to me viz "Your sword of truth is a prick of prevarication." He is simply proving this KO person's point about the relationship between wacko claimants and totalitarian ideology.
I am still wondering about legal remedies, but none of the real victims seem willing to pursue it. A class-action libel suit is technically possible, but there is no precedent for it in the US. I am also wondering if the moon-hoax liars can be prosecuted under the Canadian hate speech act, as Holocaust denialists have been. For me, an ACLU member for 25 years, to even consider this possibility is a good indication of just how far beyond the pale these nuts really are.

There is one of the HBers favourite charges I'd love to see NASA and the government jump on with both feet. HBers seem fond of the claim that Grissom et. al. and the Challenger crew were murdered. Now you can charge NASA with a lot, including fiscal irresponsibility, but murder is a whole other ball game. It would be fun, in a way, to see some HBer (and you know who I mean) on a witness stand spinning his candyfloss conspiracy theories. That would almost make it worth turning on the TV!

His book Hyperspace was my introduction to superstring theory, and thought it was pretty good, too. But do understand your reservations, did search out his web site and forum, all bun and no meat. *L* And for good or ill, eventually lead me to here via the BABB. Dunno, he seems to have a social agenda as well...

Yeah...and here I said just about a week ago that it seemed that JW was mellowing.

I really don't think I did anything to get that Salon Article thread deleted.
In fact I wish the part about that article not containing the word "nazi" at all had remained.
I apologize if I did get out of hand, but, again, I thought I was realtively civil compared to what JW was dishing out.
And oh joy, JW is going to bless someone with a review of that article. :)

I suspect I should have kept my hands in my pockets and off the keyboard, but JW's response to Chip was so bastardly that I got carried away. Well, he and I are off into email land now so at least you guys don't have to see it on the BABB. I'm sure I'm going to learn a lot of relativity equations very fast just in self-defense. Like I don't have enough demands on my time already *snarl*.
