Bringing this thread back from its 9-month snooze...

The annual cicadas near where I work have been making a ton of noise over the past week or so. A cicada map I found last year says there are no 13- or 17-year cicadas in the area, so they've got to be annuals (plus, the few specimens I've seen have the green markings of annual cicadas). What a ruckus!

A few weeks ago, there was a much smaller outburst from the annuals around my home. One of them insisted on hanging out around the door to my deck, and even did the "boomerang cicada" stunt (I described it earlier in this thread) when I tried to get rid of it.

Oh, a couple days before that, I was out on the deck and heard a cicada's "alarm call," and turned around just in time to see an annual cicada wriggle its way free of the beak of a bright-red cardinal. The cicada flew off one way in a long, straight path, and oddly, the bird decided to go the other way instead of chasing after. Perhaps it didn't like the buzzing in its beak.

We've had a large annual hatch here, too. The copperheads have all had several treats -- they love cicadas.

It's satisfactorly noisey in my yard all afternoon, these days. May it continue.
