I'll try to post this again. The blonde dye has seeped in a little to far.
Trish, does this mean I can still wait for Luke Skywalker to show up at my place with a couple of bottles of wine and vacation tickets?
Back to the original subject. Look waaaay up. Are these shows still around? Haven't turned on my TV for about a month, so I don't have a clue if they're even being advertised. When I saw the first promos for these "scariest" shows, I thought "No way, they'll bomb". I thought that about "Survivor" too, so shows what I know, huh? I still think it would be cool to put this crowd into one of those "scary" castles. Hey! We could take John Edward with us. Of course, the first thing we'd do is beat the snot out of the little s**t, but I bet it would get ratings! I'll bring my dice. I'll bet my THAC0 is lower than John's. Lisa

Sure, Lisa, you can wait for Luke, but watch out for the Dark Side of the Force.
Don't know, usually keep the boobtube off of Fox. Think in Denver on Fridays. Followed by Fox News (wait 'til I rant on these guys) then 'um that show hosted by Pileggi from X-files, the skeptic one.
The reason I don't watch Fox...Directly following the bad Moon Hoax, they run a story on cow mutilations! After the second running, they show a story about a UFO flying over Red Rock Ampitheater, (looked strangely like a mylar baloon attached to some power lines). On rare occasions they might run a newsworthy article.

Only the best show on TV! You won't learn how to cook, but you'll get to see lots of obscenely expensive (and sometimes totally gross) foods being prepared.
http://www.ironchef.com/ironfaq.shtml
Check it out on Food Network if you get it. 9pm CST Fridays and Saturdays. 6pm CST on Sundays.

I once subscribed to all of the cable channels (at that time). I found that I was not watching television and unsubscribed. I have not missed anything, I see. I seldom watch anything on television, period! Written for another species?
Of course, there must be some excellent programs on cable. However, I do not see how time can be found in my busy day to watch blather (my word)...

"written for another species" indeed.
I watch about 3 hours of TV a week...unless NOVA is doing something really interesting. Have never subscribed to cable and don't see myself changing my mind anytime soon.

I had the TV on for the first time in weeks to watch a special on Egypt on the History Channel. And then found out the damn thing was a two-parter, and I had to work the next night. Arg. Overcoming natural laziness, I figured out how to search the History Channel website, and found when it will be repeated. Good show. No kooky pyramid theory, just good old fashioned science. It's called "Egypt Beyond the Pyramids", if anyone is interested. Lisa

The premise is this: English guy dares a family to spend a night in a "Haunted place"
He tells them creepy stories, and has them perform some ludicrous druid or voodo chant, whatever the theme of the place is.
The family is given cameras which supply blair witch-esque video. Screaming and histeria follow. Sega
Sounds pretty much like that show where people go to an island for a week or whatever it is and have to live as if they are not in civilization. It was promoted as 'real', what bull. All of TV is made up, the powers that be research to see what people will watch and put on what sells, or at least they try. It's all manipulated for the audience, anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves. |

Take a trip over to http://www.skepticnews.com/ There's a Gallup poll that I found surprising and just a little disappointing. Belief in the paranormal is way up. What shocked me is the age group that is turning out to be the most gullible. For belief in haunted houses, ghosts, and witches, the highest group is the 18-29 year olds! I don't know why that, or anything else for that matter, surprises me anymore. Maybe it's because this is a generation that has grown up with technology, instead of old farts like me who've had to learn from scratch. There's so much good solid information out there, and it's at their fingertips. Why on earth would they believe that a TV crew is going to take them to a "haunted" castle and let them be chased around by ghosts? Lisa

Are you saying these people can's differenciate between fact and fiction? This is sad, and a bit scary. I'm glad you're teaching your daughter differently. With luck, her and Megan will end up running the country. You replied to my post on the other board where we were discussing the teaching of logic and critical thinking in schools. Some parents are against this. And although it wasn't mentioned, I think some educators are incapable of teaching it. Now see where it's gotten us? OOOooo, gotta watch that show where people are trapped in a REAL haunted house!! Arg. I used to love the X-Files, before it got too whacked. Also, Star Trek, Farscape, Babylon 5, and Crusade (for reasons that have nothing to do with scifi, but I've explained that). These shows are FICTION! Entertainment that's divorced from reality. And a heck of a lot of fun. I've only seen a few clips I've seen of that "haunted house" claptrap. It seemed to me that many of the people in it were of the 18-29 age group, but the show seemed aimed at maybe 12-22. Does this mean the next generation is going to be even more gullible? Lisa

Oh I hope not. Imply that X-files is fiction but the concept of the government coverup is what they're buying. Now, Fox has a new *reality* show out there...Small Town X where they have to solve a murder mystery. How this is reality and not Orient Express I don't know.
On BA yeah, I pulled my kid out of one school because the teacher was too lazy to work with students more advanced than the rest of the class.
Yeah, I've enjoyed those shows too...according to my roommate because I watched those shows I was a racist. LOL! She wanted her own room...

I am less worried about shows like the X-Files(that I personally watch religiously) than I am about the shows with names like Million Dollar Mysteries or Crossing over with John Stewart. These shows give the paranormal credibilty because of the way they present the show. Personally, I find it hard to believe that we are finally in the 21st century and significant numbers of people believe in ghosts and demonic possession.

@tomic, did you see the Gallup poll? I know that polls are notoriously unreliable. But even if you hack off a few percentage points for some wiggle room, you can still see how psychic fairs, hotlines, alternative health remedies, etc. continue to do business. There's a good article under "news" over at the CSICOP page. It's about a kid who became a telephone psychic for Miss Cleo. Pretty good reading. Lisa
