Alright, got another one:

"Ricky, if you're only 18, you deserve "Ad Hominem" attacks! <grin> You're still a kid!!!"

Its really funny cause I'm pretty sure I just taught him what Ad Hominem meant. I like how he puts it in quotes.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I'm having trouble getting through to this guy that Ad Hominem is wrong, I don't think I'll get very far with him on evolution:

"Ricky, evolution in its purest form IS atheism!"

"Star Trek is a show that is based upon science succeeding for mankind and getting them out into the stars -- there is no Jesus or Christianity in any of the Star Trek storylines! Zero, zilch, nada! Therefore Star Trek upholds the values of the evolutionists -- the God of the Bible is not real"

Man, this guy is a gold mine! (wait, that may not be a good thing, for humanity's sake)

Ha, goes without saying - so is gravity, mathmatics, that uncooked box of macaroni and cheese sitting on my kitchen counter.
And my guess, him too, towards the couple of thousands of other gods hob-nobbing around other cultures past and present.

Ricky, I wonder if you could get him to admit he's an atheist towards all the mythological gods of early Greece. Bet he'd never want to admit or say he's atheist towards them. More so, he'd just say they're false gods (religious euphemism for atheism in my book).

I'm pretty sure you can't follow any religious belief unless you claim that other gods (the gods that are not of your religion) are false. In that way, everyone is an atheist and the term atheist losses all meaning in describing a person. It was a good thought though.

I ran across this quote some months ago, somewhere:
"...I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."

Hmm, I think I'm starting to understand, but I still don't like the fact that it labels everyone an atheist, it sounds like a low redefinition to me.

It may be, Ricky, but the point is to get people to think about why they dismiss all other gods but one, and to illustrate how "close" (in terms of total gods rejected) that atheism and theism are.

While I still disagree on calling everyone an athiest, the 2nd part of it has now become my favorite quote. Thanks for sharing Dave.

Edit: And I am done posting there, that JimSDA just refused to listen and I felt nothing else could come out of the conversation. Hopefully others who read my posts there will get more out of it than jim did.

Sure, Ricky. And I do see your point about calling everyone an atheist.

Seems to me, though, that the quote is precisely what Randy was suggesting you try on the folks on the other forum. Just to see what they say. And if they do little but claim that all those other gods are "false," ask them why.

Edited to add: oh suuuure, Ricky. Edit your post while I'm busy writing my reply to your original. Pbbbbbbbbt.

Ah, I was trying to edit my last post before anyone read it, but you're just too quick Dave.

Edit: And I am done posting there, that JimSDA just refused to listen and I felt nothing else could come out of the conversation. Hopefully others who read my posts there will get more out of it than jim did.

I think I made a pretty good last post there:

quote:
Alright I think I'm done here. JimSDA, you have only shown a lack of knowlege that you refuse to give up on evolution. I have no problem with you disagreeing with it, but all I ask it for you to know what your disagreeing with. You execute fallacy after fallacy (and even two at once), and when I tell you what your doing (in the case of saying that I am only 18 ), you say its only right to commite a fallacy. Fallacies are never correct, thats why they are called fallacies. You try to insult me on my age, my spelling errors, and in a few cases my typos. This only shows that you can only argue against me as a person, not what I'm saying. You don't look for evidence, and dismiss any evidence that goes against you as being fradulent or mistaken, with out so much as a counter argument. For example, you dismiss the Bad Astronomy article simply because it goes against what you have previously heard, without so much as a reason why. When I tell you how your evidence is invaild or flawed, you go into subjects such as I have to believe or I am going to Hell, only playing red herring (changing the topic) to aviod further discussion on matters which could show a weakness in your belief. You also rarely reply to what I have said. In this, no discussion can ever take place unless both parties are willing to comment on what each other has said. You have been unwilling to do so, so the discussion will end with me leaving.

To end this, I would like to say that I hope that the rest of the members on this forum are not like JimSDA. I certainly have no reason to think that you guys are, and I have nothing at all against the rest of you. Just one last word, "Never stop questioning" - Albert Einstien.

Oh yea, and before I go, I would also like to say thanks to the owner, for you have shown true tolerance in inviting me and allowing me to post here. That is something which I deeply respect.

If anyone else would like to post there, remember the invitation has been extended to all members of this board. I would like to see the responses they give, all though I'm pretty sure they will be on the line of "Because the Bible says so".

Ha! Now you edited yours while I was replying to it. Way to call the kettle black!

And I was tempted to reply to your subsequent two posts by editing my last one again, just for kicks, but I'd probably start confusing myself.

Sounds familiar.

I don't know, in my personal opinion based on intuition, Verlch was worse, but I can't figure out why I think this.
