No these tests are through the school district. But I will only be given two weeks to get the appointment for the test and the results.

Yes, the tests here too are from the school district but a psychologist from the schools has to give it. Don't know about a time limit except to make the current semester. I would suggest you keep bugging them to test. Or threaten to sue if they don't.

Unfortunately, the best school in the area for mathematics is a religious school. But because I am an atheist I don't qualify for their tuition assistance program. I just took a $7/hour pay cut to get a job - period.

Gee! My room mate ONLY makes $8 an hour. You mean you made $7 more then you are getting now? You were lucky, hope you saved a bunch while you had it.

So my income has dropped to below 30K/year again.

We live on less then that too. Always have. There are many ways to economize.

Her first grade teacher wanted her to take the tests - but figured personality wise she would be overpowered by the other students. So she was one step back to begin with. She wouldn't even recommend she take the tests. Then her second grade teacher should have been put out to pasture.

I'm not exactly understanding what you mean but that's ok, I get the idea. You have to go to higher ups and insist on what you want. And if they still don't give it to you, make their life hell, heh, he.....that's what I did. LOL, the high school principal is retiring soon and he's not that old. Funny!!! It's just after Skylar has graduated.

quote:
I can't afford to move into that area, the houses start at 750K.

LOL, that's a dump, here. J/K. But I do hear prices are going up and I'd say $400,000-$500,000 is just bearly middle class.
Sometimes I wonder how people do get by with all the junk I see people think they must have.

Unfortunately was trying to clear up so old debts. Most of my savings were consumed between two layoffs in the past year. Actually I was making less than I should have been - oh well....Illustration is a dying art now.

I have to scramble to have the tests done inside two weeks because I have to wait until the school opens the office and then have to have them finished prior to the start of school.

So far I have seen a lot of favortism towards academic learning but have not seen anything on technical learning. In High School one of my english teachers sat me on the disinterested side of the class, and rightly so. School did nothing for me I was bored. So I decided to go into tech. Now I am a licensed sheetmetal worker making 65,000 a year. Not bad for being considered disinterested. I sometimes wish I could be as educated as most here are, I consider myself to be quite smart, just undereducated.

As far as importance goes, you can be one of the greatest minds of this era, but if you plug your toilet you still need the plumber to get you out of the mess. I come from a line of tradesmen father, grandfather, and as much as I was looked down upon in high school for not being one of the "smart" kids, I am quite proud of myself and love what I do. I would hope my children not follow my footsteps, however if they show signs of interest in that field I will support them.

I do not think it is the grandeur of a position or the amount of zeroes tacked on to one's paycheck, but the love of what you do that is important.

I agree completely. I will become a professor, which I know pays far less than any industry job in my field, but I love teaching and learning. I feel I will be far happier there.

On another note, have you seen Good Will Hunting? That is a great movie, and there is a scene where he (the main character) declares the nobility in doing "honest work," rather than academic work.

Not all change is progress.

Ah....give it a few years, you will be disillusioned just like everyone else. Heh he.
Oh and BTW, when you say pay, you must mean money. The reward[pay, if you will], is not money, it's so much more. Isn't it?

Skylar really liked that movie. I taped it when it was on TV a while ago but haven't gotten around to seeing it. Somehow the advertizing for it showing someone smoking kind of turned me off from wanting to see it.
But if I can find the tape, I'll watch it. OK? And thanks for not giving away the plot.

rickm, that's great that you've found something you enjoy for a living. My field was a trade field also - tech illustration. However, that's a dying art and the field is gasping its last breaths. I will start school (provided my FAFC goes through quickly) for a new field I have found that I can enjoy more than I did the illustration.

As far as Caity is concerned, she was five years old when she walked into my bedroom one Saturday morning, stuck her hands on her hips and announced that she was going to MIT and then Mars. She's interested in astrophysics or geophysics - she's not sure which yet. She enjoys math and has spoken with people in these fields and they are of interest to her. Her academics are an important part of her realizing her dream.

My mother actually had the audacity to tell her to go into nursing because she'd always have a job. I let her know that if Caity wanted to study astrophysics then that's what she was going to do. I wasn't going to let her do to my daughter what she did to me as far as a higher education is concerned - discourage every choice for college made. (Unfortunately, I was stupid enough at the time to listen to my parents.) My mom still thinks that I'm making a mistake by going into Industrial Design instead of computer programming. But tried programming ten years ago and got out as fast as I could - shortly after I met a VAX machine.

Good for you, Boron...we need enthusiastic and talented new folks in the classroom! Those of us who have been doing it for a while, but especially the students, need some new blood periodically.

chuckle..."astrophysics" as a field is going to dry up to the point where no jobs are available???

Here's a little advice mixed in here but from the looks of it, you don't need it.
I wanted to be an astronomer from before I can remember. When I was 10 my mother gave me a book about it for my birthday. I still have that book! But it was the schools that were the obstacle and my mother listened to them instead of backing me up. Schools IMO, still don't know what they are doing. I will always be bitter about what they did.
If the schools or a teacher tells you she can read or do math well enough. Find out why don't just let them keep her back. Don't let anyone tell you, you can't do what you want.
Ironically, my mother was a nurse, LOL. Coincidence?

I agree fully with you, I will certainly encourage my daughter to be all that she can be. Personally I hope she decides to become a neuro surgeon or something like that, so that she can support the "old man" later.
I certainly would not want anyone encouraging her to go into a generic women's role job. Although women have come a long way in professional careers it could still be better, hopefully by the time she is old enough, she's 4 now, she will have the same opportunity as any man. If she decides to be a welder just like dad I will show her everything I know.

They have always had the same opportunities. I never understand why people say they haven't.
They have been queens and heads of state, pilots, warriors, racing car drivers, and more, what else do you want? But let's face it there are some jobs they shouldn't be in, unless they meet the [real]qualifications, which most can't. Firefighter and policeman are two that come to mind.

UH! help! someone, I've fallen and I can't get up.

Why is it when a man says women are not equal they get pounded, but a woman can stand up and say the same and are glorified defenders of the feminine race. If a man tries to defend women he simply does not understand. What can I say now to make things all better. I suppose women really don't want men's sympathy, that would kinda be like a slap in the face. So I appologize.
from now on I will try to remain neutral and unbiased, unless this is not acceptable either. I'm so confused. BTW I think capt Catherine Janeway kicks ass.

I'm confused too but I have a theory.
Anyway, I'm begging to think they do have different brains. They want it both ways or maybe they haven't learned yet that when you say you want to be equal that means in everything. Not just picking and choosing. I could never figure them out.

????? Catherine Janeway, Who's that?
and BTW, I want you to know, ha ha, I wasn't going to post anything for a while. I happened to notice by accident that I had 234 posts, wanted to keep it for a while and now you made me ruin my #.

One of the best welders where I worked two years ago was a woman. They forced her into a clerical role - she quit. BTW, I have to learn welding for my degree - but not to the extent of becoming a welder.

BTW Snake is male. Defend your daughters right to become what ever she wants. Standing behind her choices is something that will give her confidence in herself. That will go a long way for her in her future.

I never asked for special consideration as a Woman Marine. It damn sure pissed me off when CMC said no women were deploying to the gulf. I should have been in SWA with my unit, not left in the states. That wasn't my decision, unfortunately.

Now, could I have handled being a grunt...um, dunno. Maybe when I was 19. Still don't think the military is willing to go that route yet.
