Well, having thought about it a bit more, I think I'd kinda like a monument of sorts. So here's my revised plan for the expeditious disposition of my carcass:

Cremate my remains, use the ashes to fertilize a vegetable garden (note: it must be a garden of edible plants).

Now, about the monument- an ordinary tombstone-type stone will do nicely. Set it up at the edge of the garden.

Carve upon it: EAT ME.

HAHAHAHAHA, thats the best one I've ever heard.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

The whole funeral business has to be one of the biggest rip off's ever conceived. Donate my body to science. College anatomy class....whatever. Maybe someone can actually learn something. Family needs to grieve? Fine have a party, put up a picture if you like and tell stories of the good old days. I told my wife take the money she would have blown on a funeral and go shopping.

I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

I've told my wife to arrange for several kegs of Bass Ale or some other suitable fine brew, and a party on the first tee of the local golf course, at the conclusion of which my ashes are to be spread in a sand trap (where I seem to have spent an inordinate amount of time over the years). Definitely NO religious mumbo-jumbo, just one last good old beer and cigar night out.

The foundation of morality is to . . . give up pretending to believe that for which there is no evidence, and repeating unintelligible propositions about things beyond the possibliities of knowledge.

But I completely agree, and as of now I think thats going to be my plan for death. Hey, if someone can learn from my demise, its not all bad...

Better make a backup plan. My paternal grandmother had arranged to donate her body to a medical school, but she wasn't under a doctor's care when she died. Consequently the law required an autopsy be performed before a death certificate could be issued. As a result, her body was no longer usable for the purpose she had intended.

She left no alternate instructions, so we had to arrange for a burial.

If you're going to will your body for scientific purposes, decide what you would want done if that's not possible, document it in your will and make sure your family and friends are aware of your preference.

Don't know how long ago your grandmother died, but as I understand things now, you cannot choose the purpose to which your body will be put, if you donate it to science upon your death.

In other words, you cannot - today - decide to leave your body to a medical school for a particular purpose.

And so, if you've willed your corpse to research, whether or not you'll wind up in the famous "Body Farm" (way cool), or get ripped apart by medical students isn't up to you. An autopsied body would simply get suffled off to some research appropriate for it.

Too tired to come up with a cite for this besides my own memory. But it was in a documentary piece about the Body Farm.

That was a bit over 20 years ago. Now that I've worked a bit at remembering just what her executor told me, she may have simply willed her body to the U of California.

The point still stands- if you've been autopsied, your body isn't going to be scentifically useful, even to the Body Farm.

So if you want to will your body to science, make an alternate plan as well.
