I choose door number one, Bob, because we all know masturbation and menstruation are EVIL and WRONG! All women, therefore, must go to hell. Men have an out

Persoanlly, i feel that if you take the logic of the anti-abortion folks all the way, not having sex as often as possible is immoral since all those potential children never get a chance at fertilization. The ultimate "what if..."

This list stops way too soon. It leaves out all of those screaming children on airplanes, not to mention surly teenagers.
Can't we raise the bar to 20 before it's immoral (not necessarily illegal) to destroy or otherwise hinder in its natural development into an adult human?

Move to Texas
They are not afraid of aborting teen agers. They seem to be especially keen on aborting the ones with mental problems. Sort of a 54th trimester birth defect abortion.

I believe the eternal part of us (aka soul) does not attach to the fetus until sometime in the second trimester.

Being both anti-abortion and pro-sex, I can agree wholeheartedly with this statement. Here's to mandatory 'sex-on-demand.'

And the source of this belief is??
My kids still love me. |

That would be some sort of enzyme secretion to attach the soul, Valiant? Perhaps some sort of "soul gene" that kicks in with the proper chemical stimulus?

I believe tracy's post should read thusly:
quote: a baby is a baby at the time of conception. nobody has the right to play god and destroy a living soul
The rest is quoted from previous posts.
[I guess I should ask you though, Tracy: Why do you believe life begins at conception?] ------------

I'd also like some clarification on what a soul is and where I can locate this for further study...

Aha. Very funny.
Seriously, any concept of a soul is based in religion and therefore unscientific. What I stated were my beliefs.

I believe you are correct. The views expressed by Tracy and I are different. I believe that you will agree that a fertilized egg is, in fact, alive. It has no brain wave activity (that happens later around the end of the first trimester/start of the second trimester) and cannot develop outside the womb. The start of brain wave activity is usually used as the demarkation of the fetus/collection of cells line.(the basic rationale of why abortion is legal in the first trimester but not in later trimesters unless the pregnancy endangers the mother's life.)
I believe your question has to do with why she believes a soul is present at the time of conception.

Sorry Valiant, just pullin' your chain.
"Soul talk" IS a belief system. Mine tends much more toward Eastern philosophy in that there is soul energy in all living creatures. If you were to "scientifically" plot soul energy on a graph based on species, it would resemble a parabolic curve as opposed to the Western tradition of the Either / Or concept. But, I'm detracting from the thread. I'd love to get into it with you under "Religion"(?).
P.S. to Tracy. My wife's first pregnancy ended in a mis-carriage that was medically termed "blighted Ovum", for what it's worth to your definition of "baby".

I would agree that it was alive in the same sense that a sperm is alive.
It seems to me that people are drawing arbitrary lines on when it becomes a "baby". I would just like some reasoning behind peoples' choices. Surely a fertilized egg doesn't meet the standards of a "baby".

The old axiom *I brought you into this world and I can damn well take you out*?
I think I made my views abundantly clear under *Are Hospitals Crossing a Line*. Though I would like to ask when an embryo becomes a life and how do we know? Someone brought up the issue of brainwaves here - approx 17 weeks but an amnio can't be performed until 26 weeks. So where does that leave a woman with a severely deformed/handicapped child? As TD pointed out earlier - point of viability.
