I'm serious about the brainwashing part.
Although it probably applies to far more then just the USMC (I wont tell you the name I made up for it unless you ask me).
I know it applies to religion, a lot of new age bullshit and quite a lot of militaries (armies would be the worst).
Radioactive GM Crops.
Slightly above background.
Safe to eat.
But no activist would dare rip it out.
As they think it gives them cancer. |

Tell us, Best, on what special comprehensive knowledge do you base these conclusions? This is a skeptic site, statements must be supported with evidence. While we're waiting, I present myself as exhibit "A" in the opposing case. I spent 6 years in the Army, one of them in actual combat. My low regard for authority dates from that period, as does my belief in the paramount importance of reason over emotion and wishful thinking. I may be many things, but brainwashed is not one of them.

I'm disappointed that no one has picked up on the real shocker in the report on Utah...who is going to shoot in a closed hall when everyone has been checked for weapons? I would guess that the secret service people would be fairly trustworthy, and hopefully the invited audience wouldn't have anyone with a death wish so just who are they afraid of? King George's troops crashing the party? I mean, really. It would be interesting if Utah did secede - especially if you want two wives, I guess. |

That was my question. It seems that they think that they will be attacked between their cars and the building. It kind of reminds me of the 'Pink Panther' series of films where Clouseau's faithful servant attacks him at all the most inopportune (for Clouseau) moments. This really makes me laugh.

I guess what surprised me most of all about the whole article was the Utah aspect. I know I'm relying on stereotypes here. Mormons just don't strike me as the types who like to carry conceled weapons. Every Mormon I've known will blather endlessly about what pacifists they are. I've even met some who disagree with self-defense! So I, too was looking for "theonion" somewhere on that article. Imagine my shock when the nexxt day CNN reported 23 guns and 2 knives taken from audience members. Oh those whacky Mormons. Lisa

Maybe they're not Mormons. Not everyone from Utah is. I'll try and dig it up but I also read that the convention also passed a resolution calling for the US to get out of the UN. Mormons have some unique beliefs but I don't think that they're reactionaries. It sounds to me like the fundamentalist militia types are running the show there.

I spent 5 years in the Marine Corps. Where we were told explicity to consider the orders we're given because we can be held accountable for following an illegal order and *just following orders* is not an excuse. I don't know if you watch American movies or not but watch A Few Good Men sometime. That is the basic premise behind the movie, being held responsible for following illegal orders.
I came away from the Marines with different feelings than Piltdown did from the Army. But much the same belief in reason over emotion, it dates from that period.
I would like to see data and studies supporting that claim.

And I just retired in April after 20 years in the Air Force. I'm curious as to what you base your "brainwashed" comment on. Please don't say "movies". Most movies depicting military life are to reality what "the Flintstones" are to paleontolgy. Lisa

I'll weigh in for the Navy. 2 years on a carrier. This statement doesn't pertain to the Navy per se, but "blind obedience" could get you killed. If there was confusion or doubt about an order, it was one's DUTY to get clarification before an order was executed. Of course, that had to be balanced by the need to work quickly and decisively, but "thinking" brains were definitely a requirement for the job.
This has been a plug from your local veterans organization. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread about armed yahoos in convention sites.

Just to weigh in with the crowd as another military person, I have to throw figurative rocks at you, bestonnet. We've had this discussion a couple of places before; why do you insist on continually bringing up erroneous claims, particularly without any ability to back them up? Tiresome.
