Let's see, drunken, stupid behavior got him to the presidency, attacking countries illegally, putting his arms around a firefighter, and strangling his gonads with a flight suit made him a bleedin' hero - I'd say this qualifies him for frickin' sainthood. |

Even in war time, absent without leave is a less serious charge than desertion. Still, since Bush was never even declared AWOL at the time, I suspect that, in the end, this will all prove to be much ado about nothing.
While it's certainly legitimate to question Bush's service (or lack thereof) during Vietnam, the Democrats must tread VERY carefully on this issue. First, the issue of Bush's National Guard service has been resurrected at least twice already since 2000. Unless something new and substantial emerges, the electorate may sense that the Democrats are just beating a dead horse for political gain (and they'd probably be right).
Second, after being exposed to the mudslinging over Kerry's Vietnam service for the last two or three weeks, the electorate could grow disgusted with the negativity. The Republicans may have drawn first blood, but once the fighting has exhausted the public's tolerance and patience, it likely won't matter who started it, nor who's right or wrong, just that the candidates and their proxies are all acting like immature jerks.
Not that I'm complaining. If folks get tired of those two bums, they may give the third party and independent candidates another look. |

The wonderful people at Factcheck.org have the latest analysis here.
The evidence is not rock-solid for the AWOL charge, but when taken together it's rather compelling. Ultimately, though, it is not likely to matter-- it's almost certain that no charges or any such will result. However, perhaps this is a 'warning shot' against the Bush people to lay off Kerry's (infinitely more impressive) war record. We'll see, I guess... |

Fuck Vietnam! I was sick of Vietnam when I was in Vietnam! Forget Vietman -- it's over, we got out ass' kicked; deal with it!
Actually, a case might be made for desertion. Gone over 30 days is all it takes. In war time, the maxium punishment for that is death. There had been only one man to recieve this sentence; Private Ernie Pyle in WW II, executed by firing squad.
But what of Bush? The records thus far show that he was missing for a number of months, yet he has an Honorbal Discharge. If the missing time can't be accounted for, is he gulity of desertion?
I don't know, although I'd love to see him explaining himself before General Courts Martial, which ain't gonna happen, alas, because there are a lot of promenent people who would be dragged into it including his father.
The best we can hope for is to send the son-of-a-bitch back to his play ranch in November.
Edited to ask forgivness for the shitty grammer and spelling. I've drank a bit. |

How's this,
It appears that no one can document that GW served his full tour of duty in the Texas and Alabama Air National Guard. So how's about the National Guard reinstating him like they are doing to so many other National Guard and Reserve members to keep warm bodies in their ranks. Having done that then ship him over to Iraq as a replacement to finish out his time. This would have the benefit of letting him see the results of his policies first hand.
Of course I just remembered that being the Commander-In-Chief he would like countermand that order.

The proper thing to do, actually. If I am not mistaken, the deal with the Guard was that if someone failed to perforn his duties, they were put on active status and would probably have their ass wrapped in cammies and shipped to where their warm body would replace another that had cooled off.
This whole AWOL question becomes more interesting every day. I'm now reading some fascinating stuff. It seems that when he went back to school, he was supposed to sign up a MA unit to finish his enlistment, but he never did.
If I were Kerry, I would so clean his clock!
