According to this morning's USA Today, Cheney's speech tonight at the RNC is going to "contrast Bush's 'demonstrated leadership and decisiveness versus Senator Kerry's confusion of conviction — both in foreign and domestic policy — that he's demonstrated during his 20 years in the Senate'" according to the Vice President's spokesperson.
Given that much of the campaign's presentation of Kerry's so-called "confusion of conviction" has come through lies and half-truths, I wonder how many lies we're going to hear tonight? More importantly, how will our hapless and vapid press corps respond to them?
I think this is one of the most important moments in the campaign. Will the press finally do their job and stop these lies? Or we see a repeat of 2000?
I'll report back after the speeches and we'll find out if I'm wrong (as I hope) or not (as I expect)...

$100 says they sit there and mutter plattitudes like, "wow, that was a powerfull speech. How do you think Kerry will need to respond to prevent his poll numbers from slipping?"
And in the tabloid news TV (i.e. FOX) it'll be, "Wow! the VP hit the nail on the head with that speech! Amazing!"

When the outcome is already known, there's no other reason to hold one of these over-priced conventions than for politicos to get together with their favorites booster clubs and lobbyists, pat themselves on the back, remind us how bad the other guy is, shmooze the mainstream press, get drunk and maybe order up a couple of high class hookers. I think Ralph Reed needs a few Hollywood papparazzi on his tail. |

The asshole who came up with the purple heart bandaid gag needs to have my size 13 boot IN his tail so far up that he will taste the dogshit and chewing gum stuck to it's fucking sole. That is a deadly insult to everyone who has ever worn the uniform in the honorable service of his or her country.

I think this is how many Vietnam veterans felt when Sen. Kerry testified that they were all war criminals.
I do agree that the band aid gag is repulsive. |

A passionate outpouring of emotion stemming from personal experience and concerning a controversial conflict by Kerry over 30 years ago is understandable to a large extent.
The band aid "gag" is inexcusible. There is no context one can put it in to explain it. It is baldfaced malice and is reprehensible. The two cannot be compared.

I dare you to find where Kerry said all or even most Vietnam veterans are war criminals. Saying crimes were committed is not the same as saying everyone in the group is a criminal. Even a dullard knows crimes were committed in Vietnam. It takes someone with integrity to point it out especially in the face of such criticism for doing it.
People support Kerry because he has the kind of courage and integrity to do such a thing.
All that and a war hero to boot. I know a lot of candidates who can only dream of having a resume like that.
It's a scary thought that the flipside of this is people support Bush because his campaign staff is willing to insult every serviceman and woman that has ever served to re-elect a man that defended Texas on weekends except for times he got out of it because he had the right kind of friends.

Robb, there is no comparison. One was a man standing up for what he believed in; the other a sorry sack of shit who never served and now has shown himself to have no clue as to what service to his country is all about.
And Kerry never said that we were all war criminals. He said that crimes were committed -- entirly true.

I'm just wondering which media pinhead will be the first to utter those infamous words "...most important speech of his political life..." The dolts seem to trot that one out every four years, like clockwork. |

Too true, @tomic! I read somewhere (I forget-- I'll have to search for the link) that some amazing number of the Vietnamese casualties were civilian-- a strong indicator that there were war crimes involved. That Kerry (and others-- he wasn't alone!) could step forward and testify about this-- especially at such a young age!-- is a testament to his convictions.
I find it strange that so many people have issues with this. After all, if anyone has a right to protest the war, would not a person who actually served in that same war be an idea candidate?!?
Still-- they're much better than our current group of 'leaders' who argue for wars (see the evil Project for the New American Century for a frightening example) despite having gone to great lengths to avoid serving in them!
May their god strike them all down! |

I find it strange that so many people in this country are stupid enough to believe that crap that comes from the GOP and the republican 527's about Kerry's war record and what he had to say about it after.
Just more evidence to show you that there are alot of sheep in the world, I guess. |

Please allow me to explain the Purple Heart. It is no more than an award given to someone wounded in battle. The wound can be anything from a blown-off limb to a minor cut, if it's worthy of treatment. And it can and too often is, awarded posthumous. All it means is that this soldier was wounded in battle. How he or she got the injury is another matter entirely.
I think that Kerry's medals are legitimate. The man was there and served with honor. Those who have never 'seen the elephant' have small room to complain.

Yeah filthy, I look at it like this.
Kerry volunteered to go to Vietnam. G.W. Bush didn't.
'nuff said. |
