Good luck in trying to find a tribe that doesn't know of Evolution AND believes in your God.

My brother-in-law makes fabulous cookies. So does my sister. Maybe they'll bake some for you. I'm busy resolving my Digital Systems homework.

May I have a cookie, nice lady?

No matter whare one goes, one takes along baggage. I do not think that verlch will find calm and piece even in the lands of the devout, whereever those might be.

Far better to study and understand what is precieved as a threat. Only with knowledge comes contentment.

Are you so chicken shit about the whole evolution thing that you just have to be in a place where everyone follows your dumb Christian creationist model?

Us atheists, who live in a country wherein fewer than 10% agree with us regarding the spiritual world, seem to get along fine without living in a monolithic atheistic society. Is evolution so shoved down your throat that you need never to be reminded of it?

How, in your daily life (what do you do again (besides surf the internet for lame masonic-conspiracy websites)?) does evolution reguarly confront you? In what ways does it-- evolution-- have a negative impact? Would things be easier if your friends and co-workers belived in creationism? How so?

We don't have a standard where people put their hands on Origin of Species and say, "I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me Darwin."

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

I bet most Christians don't even realize that the "so help me God" is just empty words for atheists (and possible agnostics too).

Christians tend to believe their God just leaks in through, don't know, osmosis or whatever.

So what should an atheist say? Any takers?

So help me Goat? Or just, "So help me." Or maybe... no. Best not to go there.

Actually, the hand on the book and oath are merely symbolic; a ceremony. There is no garentee that even the faithful will tell the 'whole' and 'nothing but.' It all depends upon an individual's moral and ethical standards. That's why there are contempt of court rules and why so many members of the judicial system have peptic ulcers.

How about:

"I promise to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, under penalty of the laws of perjury."

"So help me God" is an optional part of swearing in processes.

Atheists usually say, "I swear/affirm to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth upon my honor."

It purveys the moral obligation of the affirmant to tell the truth and that the affirmant intends to tell the truth.

How about I swear to tell the truth or you can throw my ass in jail.

Funny, witness oaths (at least as recited by the guy holding the book) often contain a God reference, but the juror's oath I took recently was devoid of any such. They did mention "under penalty of perjury", which to my mind is the crux of the biscuit...

Actually, not everyone pays this tax. You pay this tax because of "presumed consent" - ie, they assume that you want to pay it. If you don't, all you have to do is write "Skattemyndigheten", I seem to remember, and save yourself 1% of your income. I did this myself over 10 years ago - not that it matters anymore since I now live in New Zealand and I pay my taxes here. If I return to Sweden though, I will still get buried (or burnt or whatever) there - there will just not be a priest present.

A large part of the church tax is indeed opt-off, but I'm pretty sure there is still a part you have to pay, for administrative services, keeping geneologies(?) and stuff. In Swedish "folkbokföring". Maybe it has changed recently, I haven't had any reason to keep track of ir.
