I was thinking about it and it will inevitably become a real religion with goofballs who really believe it, considering that 70,000 austrailians regestered as Jedi. Whether it was a joke or not makes no difference, clearly Star Wars has a following already deemed 'religious'.

Anyway I was thinking about how to thwart potential Jedi that I meet in life, shouldnt be too hard.

Idiot: I'm a Jedi

Me: So your a virgin then?

Idiot: Huh, what do you mean?

ME: Well you must have started early if you became a Jedi and you know about the whole no fornication thing and all...

Idiot: Well..

Me: Unless you are a sith, in which case I shall have to kill you.

This is the first time I'mm hearing the Jedi as an actual religion. I mean, I know that Star Wars fans treat Star Wars as a religion... But do they actually believe in that whole the Universe has a force, and that they can move things with their minds?

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Lucas was friends with Joseph Campbell (The Power of Myth) and they discussed the whole religious significance of the 'force' and the entire story. The bigger picture is the struggle of an individual (Luke) against the seeming insurmountable evil and becoming a man on the journey. This mirrors most religious myths.

I guess there are as many facts supporting the force 'religion' as there are any other religion.

Actually they have much more evidence than most, with 6 movies, probably over a hundred books, Cartoons, Artifacts like the mystical 5' bobba fett with deadly eye gouging missle launchers, comics, web sites, etc.

Well, if Heinlein can inspire a religion (Stranger in a Strange Land), and a hack like Hubbard can get one going from a self-help book....

Why not Star Wars?

Very true Dude. I'm suprised that it hasn't overtaken Christianity. I think we would be better off then, but what would a Jedi Fundie be like?

Thwart them? Shit, we could use a few Jedi around here about now. If GW manages to lie his way into another term, a Jedi may be the only thing that can save us. Heck, all he'd need do is use a simple Jedi mind trick. Somebody of GW's apparent mental capability should be easy to control.

(Insert scene of Darth Cheney holding his thumb and forefinger about one inch apart, Brokaw stuggling as if choking.

Darth Cheney: I find your lack of faith disturbing.

Brokaw drops to the floor dead.)

(Darth Cheney: The WMD have been spirited away to Syria. The force is weak there and we will destroy them. Send in the Battledroids.)

Taking a movie to serious could be a silly to do, especially when it comes to religion.
Who is the Pope and when will he/she/it has the first speech?
In the upcoming episode, I guess?

What about a book with bed-time stories in it about talking snakes, people walking on water, and raising the dead?

I can't remember where this is from, and I can only paraphrase, so if anyone knows, please tell me:

"It seems that everyone believes anything that is written. It's like they think that if someone took the time to write it down, it can't be a lie."
