The best kids I know were brought up with complete freedom. There was absolutely NO censorship anywhere in their lives. They were permitted to be "2" when they were "2" and "3" when they were "3", etc. They really trashed their house (turning over the couch, etc., to use as stores, etc., when they were very young.) They threw food in fast food restaurants (which was picked up after them by their parents). They grew up at approximately the age of eight years and have remained at the top in their respective schools in both academics and in sports. The son (tops in both academics and sports in high school) has just started at a university with ALL EXPENSES PAID. The other (the top female athlete in her school) is well on her way to follow her brother in a few years. They are just wonderful people, and following the crowd into stupidity is not their idea of living. Of course, I always made certain that there were many encyclopedias, books, computers, computer programs, etc., lying around. However, nothing was forced upon them. It was all there for them when they were ready for it.

I originally thought that these two would never grow up alive, until their abrupt turn-around at age eight years when they began to follow the calm and rational ways of their always-consistent parents.

The hard part for the parents was in staying consistent and never being angry. It worked. They never ever followed the crowd but have been individuals throughout. They are fully-aware of all dangers out there. And they feel sorry for other teenagers who were brought up with harsh discipline. These two have become self-disciplined (the best way).

Of course, this only worked because of the continued consistency in the behavior of the parents. The only time the children were yelled at was when they were fighting with each other. They were never struck even once.

I would never have had the patience, myself, to carry this kind of thing through. It has been a marvel for me to watch them develop through the years. And it is now big rewards time for the children and the parents...

Whose bright idea is that? One community here has banned all bicycles, skateboards, and rollerblades from all sidewalks in town. It's funny how we treat children like they don't matter and then demand respect from them.

My wife and I do not strike our children nor do we expect them to act as our employees (sir, ma'am, etc). That type of behavior on the part of parents breeds resentment. We would rather our children do as we like because they love us rather than out of fear.

Greg.

Well, who ever it was would probably have a heart attack if they lived in my house. My kids have always called me by my 1st name.
I'd have hit them if they didn't. And that's not a joke.

as far as censorship goes, i am a first amendment absolutist except for serious cases of liebel and slander.

by the way, i see the justice dept has jailed a writer because she would not become an fbi informant and turn all of her research over to the feds. also sen shelby a southern republican, is re-introducing a law vetoed by clinton, that would make the release of any information deemed to be confidential by the us government a felony.

i don't think the current admin really believes in freedom of speech for all.

I thought this little item from the current version of Chuck Shepherd's News of the Weird might be relevant here: http://www.newsoftheweird.com/archive/
quote:
Two Utah men, seeking to make Hollywood movies safe for their mostly Mormon neighbors, are creating stashes of major-film releases from which they have dubbed out the cussing and the sex. Ray Lines sells the pristine versions at three CleanFlicks video stores near Provo; David Schenk runs a Clean Cut Video club in Kaysville that contains 62 titles for members to check out. "Great movies are great because they have a great story line," said Schenk to an Associated Press reporter in August, "not because they drop the F-bomb" (139 of which, for example, Schenk had to remove from "Good Will Hunting"). Hollywood studios are aware of the Utah men's work but have not commented.

At this rate, we are going to have to create a separate forum just for odd goings-on in Utah.

I almost forgot about this. The bill that is going to be reintroduced would give the Justice Department broad power to prosecute. Currently, only one who releases information that could affect national security or one who releases the identities of undercover operatives can be prosecuted. With the new law for example, Ellsberg could have wound up in jail for releasing the Pentagon Papers.

The Justice department has also been caught recently monitoring the telephone conversations of an AP reporter.

'Fraid not, Lisa. Lousiana was the first that I heard about, but after that got attention, it was brought up here in Alabama.

quote:
A new Louisiana law will require children to address their teachers, and other adult school employees, as "ma'am" or "sir" and to use Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss when calling them by name. State Senator Don Cravins, a Democrat, drafted the bill in an attempt to teach children civility and respect, and to put an end to school violence.

Riiiight. Ending school violence.

Have there been any court challenges to this? I'd love to see it. Sir/Ma'am, to me at least, are expressions of respect. Earn it.

Thats because you wont have much of one to interfere with if they get in power.

Do you know what it was like before government interfered?

Does the government then always know what is best? Why should we give our freedoms over to a small few in positions of power? Does this automatically make the shrub right in pushing his religion funding in a country that states: make no laws regarding religion? What, then, about Star Wars defense systems - especially since it violates treaties and is making our global neighbors very nervous? What about the cold war? Why is government regulation better than taking responsibility for your own actions? Sounds a lot like the authoritarian dogma of religiosity to me. Thanks, but no thanks!

Maybe it has something to do what with life was like before governments started interferring. Governments aren't perfect and many aren't any good but any democracy even if its only a corporate psuedo-democracy like the US is better then the alternative proposed by libertarians.
